VCEDA approves $2 million broadband grants for last-mile connections 

At its Aug. 21 meeting, VCEDA approved $2 million in grants for continued development of high-speed fiber optic broadband lines in Virginia's e-Region. Quillen and broadbandThe VCEDA board approved $1 million grants each to Cumberland Plateau Co., Inc. and LENOWISCO, Inc. I, which are non-profit, non-stock corporations of the Cumberland Plateau and LENOWISCO planning district commissions. Mike Quillen, VCEDA treasurer, said the VCEDA funding will be used for electronic upgrades and last-mile connections. "With further deployment of broadband in the region more jobs will be created and retained, and it will foster more opportunities for instantaneous data for companies and teleworking options for employees." Jonathan Belcher, VCEDA executive director, said, "We are actively promoting our region as a trendsetter in broadband access in rural America. These grants will enable broadband networks to continue to develop throughout Virginia's e-Region."

Local developers attend COVITS

COVITSVCEDA led a delegation of economic developers promoting Virginia's e-Region at the annual Commonwealth of Virginia's Innovative Technology Symposium (COVITS) in Williamsburg Sept. 7-9. Governor Tim Kaine and Secretary of Commerce and Trade Patrick Gottschalk both stopped by the Virginia's e-Region booth during the symposium. Representing the region were Jonathan Belcher, Jean Jordan, Susan Copeland, VCEDA;  Harry and Yvonne Rutherford, Russell County; Margie Douglass, Tazewell County; Craig Horn, Buchanan County; Charlotte Mullins, Donnie and Doris Rife, Dickenson County; Carl Snodgrass, Wise County; Fred Ramey, City of Norton; Tim Long, Lee County; John Kilgore, Scott County; and Glenda Calver, PTAC.

Hybrid energy center breaks ground
 
Regional and state officials were on hand Aug. 14 for the official groundbreaking of Dominion Power's Virginia City Hybrid Dominion groundbreakingEnergy Center. Described as the largest economic development project in the history of the region, more than 300 participated in the ceremonial groundbreaking for the $1.8 billion, 585-megawatt power plant that is expected to contribute more than $400 million a year to the Wise County economy.
First carbon storage test

Congressman Rick Boucher had the honor of flipping the switch to turn on a massive drill for a test project for the storage of carbon dioxide in unmineable coal seams. The Virginia Center for Coal and Energy Research (VCCER), Congressman Boucher, CNX Gas and the Russell County Board of Supervisors hosted a groundbreaking ceremony Aug. 18 at a CNX gas well in Russell County that will be the first test of carbon storage in Central Appalachian coal seams. The VCCER leads the research team for this project, which is funded by the National Energy Technology Laboratory of the US Department of Energy, through the Southern States Energy Board, and is part of the Southeast Carbon Sequestration Partnership (SECARB).
VCEDA awards Benjamin Case grant
 
Benjamin CaseAt its Aug. 21 meeting, the VCEDA board approved a $75,000 grant for Benjamin Case LLC, a manufacturer of a structural steel wall panel system that moved its manufacturing operations into the former Keith building in the Duffield Regional Industrial Park in June. The grant was funded from the organization's Coalfield Regional Opportunity Fund, a program designed to help bring new jobs and investment into the seven-county, one-city coalfield region which VCEDA markets as "Virginia's e-Region."

The VCEDA board  has approved a grant for up to $700,000 to the Wise County Industrial Development Authority to be used toward costs of the rehabilitation and restoration of The Inn at Wise. Built about 1910, the Inn at Wise is listed as a Virginia Historic Landmark and is also on the National Register of Historic Landmarks. The board authorized up to $200,000 for release at this time for basic stabilization of the property. VCEDA Executive Director Jonathan Belcher said the funding for the Inn at Wise will help stabilize this historic property while additional funds are sought for the project by the Wise County IDA. 
 
The VCEDA board approved a loan of up to $525,000 to be used to pay towards the purchase of real estate for a new Bryant Electric, LLC facility near West Main Street in Wise. Bryant Electric is a new, locally owned company formed in July that purchased assets of an existing Wise County business, Bryant's Mine Electric, Inc. The new company will specialize in rebuild and custom build of electric motors and equipment and supply electrical and communications supplies and services for the mining industry.
 
The VCEDA Board of Directors recently welcomed three new members.  New members include Sue Ella Boatright-Wells, dean of workforce development at Mountain Empire Community College; Glen "Skip" Skinner, executive director of LENOWISCO Planning District Commission; and Harry Childress, coal industry representative.
