Guest Speaker:

Ryan Hallowell, Scheels

Ryan talked about Scheels' goal to be a regional destination for shoppers in Illinois, providing a wide range of products, product experts, and amenities such as a large saltwater aquarium, Ferris wheel, and sports simulators.  Scheels decided to locate in Springfield because it is a prime location for retail growth, with the meeting of two interstates, a presidential library & museum and the state capitol.

The majority of Scheels employees who are moving here plan to stay in the area as permanent residents. Scheels stores donate a percent of profits to the communities where they are located.

Sheels expressed interest in working with the MBBA and the community to keep shoppers in Springfield to enjoy other shopping and tourist attractions.  Kevin said that Scheels invites direct competition, saying "great competition leads to bigger markets."
Government Update
  • Ward 7 Alderman Debbie Cimarossa, in her last meeting as our Alderman spoke about not being in favor of the dining tax and being a co-sponsor of increased parking fines, which haven't been revised since the 1980s.  Debbie said she will have more time and intends to be more involved with the MBBA in the future.  Attendees gave Debbie a round of applause in appreciation of her service to the City of Springfield and the MBBA.  Debbie mentioned having the City Council do a non-binding resolution in support of the MacArthur Master Plan.
  • Sangamon County Board Member Jen Dillman was in attendance and spoke about the Redevelopment Plan.
  • Several candidates were in attendance, including Michael Higgins, candidate for Alderman Ward 7 and Joe McMenamin, candidate for Alderman Ward 7.
