Greetings!
Updates from the MBBA:

Adopt-A-Street

The MBBA is organizing quarterly littler pickups on MacArthur Boulevard from Wabash to Governor Street.

Look for us cleaning YOUR street on October 9 from 9-11am.

Thanks to the Blessed Sacrament 8th Graders for helping with our Adopt-A-Street kickoff!  Adopt-A-Street volunteers must be pre-registered through the City of Springfield.

We challenge neighbors, business owners and property owners to clean up other streets and alleys in the  MacArthur area!

Flooding in the MacArthur Area

Several MBBA members attended the September 20 meeting about flooding.

City of Springfield Public Works Director Mike Norris addressed an outspoken group of about a 50 residents and property owners from all areas of Springfield.

The city does not currently have the budget to fix combined storm and sanitary sewers or to clean existing sewers more often than once every 10-12 years.  Even if funds were available to improve the storm and sewer systems, the storm sewers would not handle a "100-year event" and would overflow into the streets.

Property owners with basements flooded by storm water and sewage backing up from basement drains and fixtures are urged to call the Public Works department even if someone else near you has already called.  The daytime number (before 3pm) is 217-789-2244, and the after-hours number is 217-789-2246.

Other options were suggested to prevent storm water and sewage from backing up into basements as well as information on what could or could not be done to solve the underlying problem.

MacArthur Boulevard In the News

State Journal Register September 28
The State Journal Register featured the redevelopment plan on the front page of the September 28 newspaper.
MBBA President, Cory Jobe, is quoted:

'Jobe hopes the basic improvements - sidewalks, curb cuts, burying utilities and uniform signs - could be done in about three years.  "It's going to take us 12 to 14 months for us to finalize some funding sources, and another 12 to 16 months to turn dirt," Jobe said.'

Illinois Times September 16
The Illinois Times' article about the third public meeting presented by Lakota group quotes Lakota / CLUE Group consultant Kennedy Smith:
'While nearby residents have buying power worth about $296 million, much of their money goes to other parts of the city. "That is a huge amount of potential sales. If you could just get 5 or 10 percent more of that ... it could go a long way," says Kennedy Smith ...  "There are significant retail leakages in almost every category. So a lot of this $296 million in sales that neighborhood residents are making is in fact leaving the neighborhood. ... The golden opportunity here is to find ways to recapture some of these sales."'

Benedectine Fundraiser

Dave Saner, MBBA Treasurer, asked us to pass this along...

While my day job is owning Luers Footwear Group, on MacArthur (for 50 years this year), I also teach several classes at SCI-Benedictine.

You may get "hit up" this week from an SCI baseball player, looking for a door prize or hole sponsorship for their golf fundraiser this weekend.  I could think of worse ways that you could spend a little advertising money, and these guys are future leaders in the community.

These guys are a QUALITY group of young men - and Benedictine is growing every year - for those of you who could market to them.

Thanks - hope you are having a great month in light of these economic times.
