Give a pint, get a pint The Baskin Robbins store located at 1700 S. MacArthur will be hosting a blood drive to benefit the Central Illinois Blood Center on Friday, Oct. 10 from 2-5 p.m. Anyone who donates a pint of blood will receive a coupon good for a free pint of Baskin Robbins ice cream. Please consider supporting this worthwhile cause, especially those who live and/or work in the MacArthur area.
Beautification efforts continue While large-scale beautification projects, such as grant money for streetscape improvements, are still being pursued by the MBBA there are steps that businesses and individuals can take on their own. The City of Springfield is participating in the "America in Bloom" contest, and more details can be found at www.springfieldinbloom.org. What is America in Bloom?
America In Bloom is an organization dedicated to promoting nationwide beautification programs and both personal and community involvement through the use of flowers, plants, trees and other environmental and lifestyle enhancements, and to providing educational programs and resources to that end. In 2009 the City of Springfield will be judged in the 100,001 to 300,000 population category in the areas of Floral Displays; Tidiness; Landscaped Areas; Urban Forestry; Heritage; Community Involvement; Turf & Groundcovers and Environmental Effort.
Congratulations to Ross Issac Chef Sean Keeley is celebrating the one-year anniversary of his restaurant, Ross Issac, on Friday, October 10. There will be free appetizers and live music provided by Jill Benoit and Sarah Schneider beginning at 6 p.m. Also, Ross Issac will be open on Mondays starting Oct. 20. Show your support by calling 744-7677 for reservations.
Welcome to new business "Tasti Thai"Tasti Thai is now open in the Town & Country Shopping Center, in the space previously occupied by Banana Leaf. The owners are Aloune and Savaros Thongsithavong. The restaurant will serve both Thai and Chinese food, and also has a private room for parties or groups to meet. Hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday. The phone number is 698-8888.
Now accepting applications for board positions If you are interested in becoming more involved with the work of the MBBA, consider serving a one-year term as a board member. Contact Cory Jobe (622-9630) or Michelle Higginbotham (553-4629) for more information. A slate of officers will be presented for at the November general membership meeting for voting at the December meeting.
MBBA plans to reintroduce payday loan ordinance While we were disappointed with the vote on the payday loan ordinance at the Sept. 16 City Council meeting (5 to 4 against), we have already regrouped and made plans to reintroduce this ordinance before the end of the year. We have a staff recommendation to approve the ordinance, and the Regional Planning & Zoning Commission not only unanimously recommended approval but increased the distance from 750 ft. to 1500 ft. as we requested. Combined with the bipartisan support we have for this issue and support from the mayor's office, we believe it can still pass.
Please call or email the aldermen in question to let them know that you were disappointed by their vote and you urge them to support the ordinance when it comes up again. The more they hear from us, the better!
Voting NO: Frank Edwards, Ward 1 529-0973 Voting NO: Frank Kunz, Ward 3 753-0275 Voting NO: Frank Lesko, Ward 4 891-3255 Voting NO: Kris Theilen 787-1744 Voting NO: Tim Griffin 787-8233 Absent: Steve Dove 414-9030
Emails can be sent through the city website, www.springfield.il.us. With your help, we can make the MacArthur area a better place to live, work, and do business.
