| Major Redeveopment Project on MacArthur |
At the general membership meeting on August 14, Jim Kuhar of Aspen Real Estate spoke to the MBBA about plans to redevelop the former Spillway bowling alley into a retail and office center. The 20,000+ square foot building will be divided into separate suites, anchored by a restaurant facing the MacArthur side. The suites facing Outer Park will have separate entrances and could range in size from 2200-6000 sq. ft. Preliminary plans call for the front 30 ft. of the building to be torn down and replaced by a new façade. Potential tenants are currently being sought, and construction should begin once the initial commitments are made. For more information on leasing opportunities, contact Jim Kuhar at 415-5555. |
| Anchor Tenant Announced for Legacy Pointe |
Legacy Pointe, the lifestyle center being developed at the south end of the MacArthur Boulevard extension, has announced the first anchor tenant. Scheels, a sporting goods store based out of North Dakota, has pledged to build a 200,000 sq. ft. superstore, which is expected to draw traffic from surrounding communities as well as local shoppers. Construction should begin later this year, with completion in 2010. The first section of the MacArthur extension is scheduled to open in the fall of 2009. Steve Luker, the developer of Legacy Pointe, also hinted that other tenants would be announced soon. |
| Welcome new business "Jewelry by Judy" |
Jewelry By Judy is now open at 1804 S. MacArthur, in the building previously occupied by Nail Time. Judy Parrish and her husband live on Williams Boulevard, so she liked the idea of having her business nearby. Although she has been in the jewelry business for the past 12 years, she previously traveled to various shows, so this is her first retail location. All the jewelry is handmade, and Judy can make customized sizes or even a piece to match a wedding or prom dress. The store also offers Swarovski crystal, home accessories and decor, gift items, and framed sports pictures.
Hours are Tuesday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturdays/Sundays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The phone number is 523-7869.

| MBBA Members Attend Public Hearing |
The MBBA has been working with Aldermen Debbie Cimarossa and Mark Mahoney on an ordinance that would restrict consumer installment loan businesses, also known as "payday lenders." While the ordinance would apply to the whole city, the MBBA has taken a lead role in this effort due to the high concentration of payday lenders currently located along MacArthur. A public hearing with the Regional Zoning and Planning Commission was held on August 20 and Michelle Higginbotham and Julie Dirksen spoke on behalf of the MBBA and the neighborhood association, respectively. The commission voted unanimously to recommend the ordinance to the city council and also heeded the input from the MBBA by extending the proposed distance between payday lenders to 1500 ft. instead of the 750 ft. originally outlined in the ordinance, which the MBBA did not feel was sufficient. The MBBA is still actively working with the city and our elected officials to hone the language of the ordinance prior to the city council vote on Sept. 16.
