"A Paradise for the Kids"

Every week in our updates we will give you a little history of one of the children at the home.  This week's child is Gerry Canete.

On June 6, 2000, Gerry Canete came to Subic Bay Children's Home.  At the age of ten his parents separated.  His mother now has another family.  Gerry and his father lived with his Aunt (Sister of his father) where they helped in a small canteen.  His other brothers and sisters moved in with their Aunt (sister of their mother.)

A dried fish dealer from a village near Subic Bay Children's Home came and ate lunch at their cafeteria where Gerry and his father worked.  On December 1988,  she arranged with the boy's father to have Gerry as their helper in exchange for a sum of money.  She had promised to send Gerry to school. The boy's Aunt further persuaded her brother to go ahead with the deal.   It was very hard for Gerry to go with a stranger, but he had no choice because his Aunt beat him. They stayed in Manila for several months to sell the merchandise the lady had before they returned to Olongapo.

The woman and her son mistreated Gerry. He had to work all day without proper food and sleep. He ran away four times. He begged from one place to the other for his food and slept on streets.

Last May 2000, the son of the cook of Subic Bay Children's Home saw Gerry sleeping on the street. He would often give Gerry food. The cook later told her son to bring to Gerry to Subic Bay Children's Home.  During his first week of stay in the home, Gerry had a hard time in adjusting to others. He always cried and was very lonely. He was so thin and sickly.  He has improved a great deal in his behavior since coming to the Children's Home. He is now very friendly to the other children and participates actively inside the classroom.

Personal Note:  I talked with Gerry  during my visits.  He also wrote me a letter telling me about his past before coming to children's home.  He told me he was only given a small piece of bread to eat for the whole day.  The woman mentioned above would make him work the whole day on that little bit of food.  Gerry was so malnourished that he developed large knots under his skin from not getting the nutrition he needed.  He still has them today.

Gerry now is grown and helps out in the livelihood projects.  When a pig is killed he gets the tail and cooks it on the spot (Yummy).

"Precious Got Saved"

Last Sunday night after hearing a sermon on salvation Jean Ann (Precious) Ramos walked down the aisle to accept Jesus Christ as her Saviour. Pray for her growth as a new Christian.

I can testify that she is one of the sweetest young ladies you will ever meet.  Her face comes to my mind a lot.

Rice Drive Promotional Video

We made a new video promoting the "20 Ton Virtual Rice Drive."  It consists of pictures of the kids eating in the cafeteria and the kids singing "Chewy Chewy Umpapa" in the background.

The video is posted on YouTube and other such sites so hopefully it will go viral and spread around the net.   To help it go "viral" people need to view it and leave comments.  This is where you can help.

This method of promotion has worked well for the subicbaykids.org site and it's very inexpensive because I do it myself.  You can view it here:

"20 Ton Rice Drive Underway"
Your Help Needed
The "Rice Store" is up and running.  We already have 1 5/8 tons of rice purchased!  So we are off to a good start.

Our goal is to have enough funds by Jan. 2010 to purchase the 20 tons of rice.  One supporting family is making it their goal to raise enough money to purchase a whole ton.  A good idea that I didn't mention in my last update.

We have also made a promotional video, donation letter, and a poster for those who want to help promote the food drive.
  • Poster - Either letter size or 2 X 3 poster.  Some Office Max/Impress stores can make a large color poster for $29.  Just take them the MSPublisher file. It's too large to email and you won't be able to open it unless you have MSPublisher.  Poster - Bottom of the page
  • Donation Letter - You may also download a sample donation letter that I created.  You may change it to suit your taste and style or use your own creation. I am writing to business owners I know to whom I have sent business over the years.  Letter - Bottom of the page
  • Rice Store - Send as many people as you can to the "Rice Store" to purchase anything from a half bag to 20 tons of rice. Rice Store
The Poster and Donation Letter is on the www.subicbaykids.org site for viewing and download.

 A Piglet Returned

Someone stole one of the piglets a few days ago but a neighbor recognized it when someone in town was trying to sell it.  It was returned to the children's home unharmed.  Also some cleaning equipment was stolen the same night and it has not been returned.

Property being stolen is a constant problem at the children's home.  The thieves come up from the river at the bottom of the mountain at night to steal.  The thieves use minors most of the time to do their dirty work.

One of our future projects is build a wall all the way around the property to stop the stealing.
