ID YOUR PET (and keep these links for future reference)!

Have you ever found a pet and not known what to do?  Or even worse, lost one and were unsure where to begin your search?  There are so many resources available; we'd like to help you know how to reach a happy ending for both you and the misplaced pet!  Before you find yourself missing a beloved pet, your first safeguard is to keep a collar with tags (with up-to-date contact information) on your dog at all times.  Although your pet may dislike the collar at first, he will get used to it!  A collar and current tag can ensure your pet finds his way home in case he does somehow get out.

microchipping
puppy is scanned for microchip

A pet microchip is also a great back-up ID solution.  Available at most veterinary clinics or animal shelters, costs of the chip and registration can range between $10-$75 depending on the provider.  After having your pet chipped, you will need to register either online or by mail so your missing pet can be traced back to you.  Also, if you later move or change your number, you will have to contact the microchip company with this information, which is easy to overlook!  If these safeguards fail or you find a lost pet and don't know how to find her owner, there are numerous resources available to you:

One of the best pet "lost and found" websites is Pets911.  Pets911 allows you to search by area, breed, and gender for lost pets and also report a stray pet you may have found.  Other options available to you include looking on Craigslist under both the "Pets" and the "Lost and Found" sections,  Maricopa County Animal Care and Control, Petfinder, Arizona Humane Society, and PetHarbor.  Also, some local newspapers will allow you to run free ads if you find a pet.

One of the most effective techniques is to put large-print fliers up at major cross streets wtihin a 2-mile radius of your home, or the area where you found the pet.  Some communities have sign ordinance restrictions, so be sure to check first or take fliers down promptly.  If you find a pet you can take her to the Arizona Humane Society or a nearby veterinary clinic to be scanned for a microchip.  Most important, don't give up - many pets have been reunited with their families months, and even years, after they first went missing!  We recommend that you use not one, but most or all of the suggestions above for the best results.

 Calling All Animal Heroes

Friends of Animal Care & Control ("Friends") is a non-profit organization whose mission is to end euthanasia of healthy and adoptable pets by raising funds to support the programs of Maricopa County Animal Care & Control (MCACC) and providing free spay/neuter services to low-income residents of Maricopa County.  Friends is seeking animal heroes to be honored at their 9th Annual Hero Awards on Saturday, October 29, 2011.  The fundraising gala, which is presented by PetSmart and hosted by Event Chairs Debbie Gaby and Joelle Hadley with Honorary Chair, Ann Siner, will pay special recognition to animals who have shown courage and stsupercatrength in a time of crisis, provide a service to the community, or, who have saved the life of a human or another animal.  The public is invited to submit nominations for animals they feel have proven themselves to be a Hero within our community.  Nomination forms can be downloaded from the Friends of Animal Care & Control website at www.azfaccs.org/events/hero.php.  All Hero nominations must be postmarked by July 15, 2011.

Each animal Hero (and a human companion) will be invited to attend the Hero Awards dinner gala where they will be awarded a beautiful custom medallion.  Last year's Hero's include:  "Target", a beautiful female shepherd mix who fearlessly saved the lives of soldiers by stopping a suicide bomber from entering the crowded camp, "Bhodi" the cat who was brought into the MCACC West Shelter, terrified and later became a surrogate parent to over five litters of kittens at the shelter and "Kobe" who miraculously alerted his parents of their son's seizure! The 2011 Hero Awards will be held at the Arizona Biltmore Resort & Spa, Grand Ballroom in Phoenix.  For information on how you can attend the Hero Awards, or for table purchase or sponsorship opportunities, email Tina Eacret at edfaccs@gmail.com  or call (602) 840-2843.  Proceeds from the Hero Awards will benefit Friends of Animal Care & Control in its lifesaving efforts to spay and neuter the dogs and cats in Maricopa County.

Employee Spotlight:  Cassie Grabowski

Cassie is one of our veteran employees; having been with us since our grand opening in September of 2008, she knows it all! She is one of our "go tcassieo" Guest Service Attendants, always willing to go the extra mile for a guest in need!  If anyone has a question about a pet guest, we can always trust that Cassie will know the answer.

On many days, Cassie also serves  as our resident "chef" - can you imagine how complex it can be to dish up more than 100 different servings for a single mealtime on a regular basis?  Some dogs prefer Nutro premium pet food; some come with their own raw food diet; others prefer green beans, garlic or ground turkey mixed in, and some even enjoy custom stew cooked by their family.  Certain finicky cats enjoy their dry food with an accent of fresh Mackerel, while others prefer a more simple meal of canned cat food.  The designated "chef" at each meal has to keep all these palate preferences straight, and Cassie does a great job of making sure every guest gets exactly what mom or dad ordered.

At home, Cassie has 2 pups of her own: Maggie, a crazy 2 year old Boston Terrier and Shelby, a 9 year old Australian Cattle Dog mix.  When she's not taking care of business at Second Home, Cassie loves spending time with her 7 year old son, Jared, and playing with her crazy pups!  Her favorite part of her work day is either just loving on the guests or keeping a watchful eye over our high-energy doggie daycare dogs.

hot coals

HOT COALS??

This is what the hot Arizona pavement feels like to your pet.  If the surface is too hot for YOU to walk on barefoot, it's too hot for your pet.

Paw pads are not immune to burns, and in fact they can burn quite easily.  Keep your dog off hot surfaces except early in the morning and well after the sun has set, or invest in a stylish pair of "dog booties", available at most pet retail stores.
