Heatstroke (Hyperthermia)
In Arizona, where heatstroke is all too common for people and pets alike, the best way to protect your pet from falling victim to this serious or even fatal condition is to know its signs and treatments.
First, remember that your dog has to be "conditioned" to outside exercise just like you do. Don't begin with an hour-long jog or desert hike; start with small, 15-minute walks around your neighborhood and over several weeks, gradually increase to more lengthy outings. ALWAYS carry plenty of water for both you and your dog, and don't forget to bring a collapsible bowl for your dog to drink from!
Heatstroke occurs when normal body mechanisms cannot keep the body's temperature in a safe range. Animals do not have efficient cooling systems (like humans who sweat), and they can get overheated easily. A dog with moderate heatstroke (body temperature from 104-106 degrees Fahrenheit) can recover within an hour if given prompt first aid and veterinary care (normal dog body temperature is 100-102.5 degrees Fahrenheit). Severe heatstroke (body temperature above 106 degree Fahrenheit) can be deadly, and immediate veterinary treatment is required. Guest Spotlight:
Sidney and Simon Grumley, the Twin Wonders
These handsome Australian Labradoodles have been coming to SHPR since September of 2008, when they were just a year and a half old. Now 5 years old, Sidney and Simon are a part of the SHPR family and have stayed with us more than 300 times. Anyone in daycare will tell you that Tuesdays and Fridays just wouldn't be the same without these boys; their high-energy play ensures that there's never a dull moment. When they're not playing in doggie day care, Sidney and Simon are therapy dogs at John C. Lincoln, charmng patients every Thursday night. In order to become therapy dogs, both became certified through the AKC's Canine Good Citizen Program. Both the boys and their owners were then interviewed by Therapy Dogs International. During their visits to the hospital, these amazing boys go to all the patient floors, all three ICUs, and the emergency room. Mr. Grumley tells us that on several occasions when Sidney has walked into a comatose patient's room and put his head under the patient's hand, their monitor has shown a reaction. He has also found Simon in bed with a smiling patient; the nurse said that this patient had been unresponsive for quite some time prior to Simon arriving to brighten his day. We're very thankful and proud that we are the "Second Home" of such incredible dogs - we love you Sidney and Simon! Employee Spotlight:
Nikki Laufenberg, Doggie Daycare Extraordinaire |
Before joining Second Home Pet Resort as our Doggie Daycare leader, Nikki graduated the University of Arizona with a Bachelor's of Science degree in Veterinary Science; after graduation she spent two years working at a local rescue shelter, Animals Benefit Club ("ABC"). While at ABC she did just about everything from cleaning, to adoptions, to dog introductions. She then joined the SHPR family before our doors were even open in August of 2008; in fact, when she came in for her interview and took a tour, she recalls that there weren't even walls inside, just boards and cement.
Nikki is truly the leader of our daycare pack; she personally handles all of the daycare evaluations and has a great understanding of dog behavior. She says her favorite part of the day is water park time; she loves taking all the dogs out and not only watching but participating in their water park play.
After work, Nikki goes home to Sidney, her 11 year old Pomeranian, and Noel, her 3 year old Chow/Lab mix whom she adopted from ABC. Sharing the house with Sidney and Noel are her two cats, Tigger and Buffy, and her Senegal parrot, Woogie, who has a 30-word vocabulary. She says that not only does the parrot tell her he loves her, but he's also been known to tell Sidney to be quiet on several occasions. Nikki says that if she was a dog, she would be a Newfoundland. |

Pet Fact:
The coat color known as "merle" is a solid base color with lighter patches that give the coat an uneven speckled effect. If 2 merle Aussies are bred together, 25% of the puppies will be either deaf, blind or both.

Fun summer treat ideas:
Peanut Butter Kongs are always a pet favorite, but in the summertime try freezing them for a cool treat for your hot dog.

Broth ice cubes are another great idea for Arizona summers. Simply fill up an ice cube tray with a 1-to-1 mixture of broth and water, freeze them, then let your pet cool down with an icy summer treat! | |
