| This toad can kill your pet!
Recent rains attract deadly Colorado River Toad |
The name might be misleading, but the danger is very real; Colorado River Toads, also known as Sonoran Desert Toads, are alive and well in Arizona and they love the puddles that materialize after desert rains. This wet environment is an ideal breeding ground for a creature most local residents have never seen. If you have streams, drainage ditches, a swimming pool, golf course water features, ponds, or other attractive habitats near your home, beware. These giant brownish-yellow wart-covered toads, which can grow to between 4" and 7" long, secrete a neurotoxin through their skin that can kill a family pet in less than 15 minutes.
Curious pets will inevitably discover this animal lurking around water sources (even pet's outdoor water bowls) in the yard. Their natural instincts may lead them to "mouth" the animal in an attempt to investigate; if this happens, your pet will be in very serious trouble and will likely soon be fighting for his life.

Dogs form strong perceptions about experiences and the world around them in the first few months of their life - these perceptions can become "hard-wired" and can be exceedingly difficult to overcome later in life. The result? A dog who may become difficult to handle, uncomfortable in new situations, and less capable of experiencing all the joys that life has to offer.
"Socialization", or the gradual exposure to new and different stimuli in a positive context, helps puppies to become well-adjusted adult dogs. And, many older dogs can still reap great benefits as well; it's never too late! Every dog should learn critical "life skills" in the following four areas:
1. Handling
2. Animals
3. People
4. Environment
Following are a few quick tips for socializing your dog in each of the four categories:
Handling
Dogs need to have their nails trimmed regularly for their comfort and safety, but many don't enjoy the experience. Next time you're watching TV with your pet, try this simple trick (MORE)... |
