Spring Is In The Air! Time for Spring Cleaning!

Spring cleansing means detoxifying your body. It's a way to recharge, rejuvenate, and renew. Anybody can benefit from cleansing, but not everyone is ready for intensive deep cleaning. A detoxification program should be tailored for your individual body type and preferably medically supervised. The body is coming out of what might be called hibernation. Detoxification is a way you can jump-start your body for a more active life, a healthier life. According to Ayurveda you should cleanse with each season change, but here in the Pacific Northwest, the Spring clean might just be the most important.

All of this rain that has fed our planet and made our environment the rich emerald green we all love is not as good for us as it is for the trees and flowers. This is Kapha aggravating time of year, which means extra weight and lots of mucous. This is why many people come down with the ubiquitous spring cold and start in with hay fever each year.

There's no vacuum or mop needed for this little "housekeeping" ritual. It means drinking juice -- a whole lot of juice and little else -- which pushes everything thing else out of your system. It's a great way to clean the pipes (or channels) so to speak. Juice green veggies, cilantro, parsley, ginger, and a lemon every day. If you really want a good push then fast on this concoction for at least 3 days, with 5-10 being even better if you would like to lose some extra weight and mucous.

Coming off of your fast is just as important as being on it. You can add an apple the first day and continue your juicing, you can add in some steamed vegetables the second day, and continue your juicing, you can add some broth the third day and continue your juicing, eventually moving to a diet rich in whole foods and free of caffeine, alcohol, sugar, and processed foods. If you feel that you need or miss protein then add in the Fern Life Center Detox Protein Powder for an added boost to your detox. Help your body's detoxification by having a colon hydrotherapy session each day of your fast with our amazing 30 year practicing Nemaha Medicine Man, White Heron. You will be shocked at what comes out, even when you are only drinking veggie juice. Add steam and massage to aid in tissue release and lymphatic drainage or sign up for the prime time slots for Pancha Karma, the amazing 5 day detoxification program from Ayurveda that adds years to a youthful life.

It's that time, so treat your body well and avoid the spring cold and flu season. Here's to your health!

It's Spring, Let's Eat!

We talk a lot about eating at Fern Life Center. It's obvious that food is at the center of our physical health, but it's also at the core of our mental, social and spiritual health. How can we bring food into its full rightful place in our lives? The best way to support everything positive about food and community is to join a CSA.

"CSA" stands for Community Supported Agriculture and is defined by Wikipedia as "an alternative, locally-based socio-economic model of agriculture and food distribution." (The whole Wikipedia article is good. Click here to read.) A CSA subscription is sort of like a magazine subscription, except instead of getting a circular each week, you receive an assortment of locally-grown, fresh, in-season fruits and vegetables; some CSAs also include dairy, honey and meat products. It is a way to intimately connect with our environment- the same storms and sun that alternately thrash or warm us equally impact our food. We have a unified experience before we even meet the luscious apples and astringent strong greens destined for our bellies. In addition, we directly grow our local economy.

The farmers and gardeners who attend to our food supply also get to thwart an industry that subsidizes chemical, pesticide and GMO seeds (genetically modified organisms). With the commitment of our subscription, they are free to focus on growing and spend less effort on polishing and marketing their produce.

Below are listed several resources for finding the best farm to fit your needs. They can vary by location (60 options within 60 miles of Issaquah!), farm products, cost and delivery method and length of growing season:

1. The USDA has an excellent informational site. Includes links to sustainability sites, directories to find local farms and resources.Click here to read more.

2. Local Harvest - type in your zip code and see locations and descriptions for all the farms close to you. Click here for the web site.

3. Don't forget about Farmer's Market for on-the-spot needs. Issaquah's Farmer's Market opens April 21st! Click here for details. (The Local Harvest web site also has farmer's market resources for your community.)
