A Holiday Note from Keesha
Happy Holidays everyone! I have been getting a lot of clients in my office post-Thanksgiving who have come in not feeling as good as they were BEFORE the holiday season started. Remember to treat yourselves with the gift of good health this holiday season. Have a joyous and merry season with your loved ones and celebrate the times you have together with food that enhances who you are rather than dimming your sparkle. If you do make the choice to indulge in some favorite foods and drink that you feel are necessary to make your season bright, do it without guilt or shaming yourself. Try not to make one indulgence a spiral that takes you down into low energy and even inflammation and weight gain.
You can re-set your new year in 2012 with a detox, colon-hydrotherapy treatment, ayurvedic facial, Pancha Karma, and our Ideal Protein weight loss program if you would like a fresh start. These all make great gift ideas (we have gift certificates at the clinic). You can make an appointment with Gillian or myself and get on a cold and flu prevention routine that will make your winter season a healthy one even if your co-workers or family members are all sneezing and coughing around you. Prevention really is the best way but we do have ways of cutting your cold or flu short if you wind up sick.
I am very grateful for the gifts of a beautiful clinic, staff, and clients who form the amazing community here at Fern Life Center. Come in and pick up a free pedometer as our gift to you. Let us know what you would like to see us do differently for the coming year so we can set our New Year's resolutions to match your needs!
Happy Holidays and Warmest Wishes to you all! |
December Recipe - Keesha's Holiday Salmon
I serve this for holiday parties and meals. I am constantly asked for the recipe. It's easy and yummy!
One wild caught salmon filet
½ cup fresh squeezed lemon juice
2 TBSP Worchestershire Sauce
1 clove garlic crushed
Celtic Sea Salt to taste
Black pepper to taste
½ tsp dried mustard powder
½ cup olive oil
Mix the last 7 ingredients to make marinade and pour over salmon. Marinade at least 3 hours. Broil over open heat until salmon flakes with a fork. Serve.

Dr Gillian
Doctor of Nursing Practice | Dr. Gillian's Pick - What To Eat During the Holidays?
December can be a month loaded with health challenges. Not only is it the darkest month in our northern hemisphere, but we are surrounded by pressures to celebrate, much of it by eating. Choosing foods through the holiday season is like navigating an obstacle course with constantly changing topography. Sugar is bad, but is sugar substitute better? For this month, I have 2 recommendations for figuring out how to choose foods, whether they be main dishes or desserts. Because these are principle-based, they leave lots of room for judgment, exactly the kind of thoughtfulness for which this dark, internally-focused month is made.
1. Michael Pollan, food guru. His simple mantra says almost all we need, "Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants". He also has published a book, "Food Rules: an Eater's Manual" (the new illustrated version may make a nice gift), with recommendations such as, "Shop the peripheries of the supermarket and stay out of the middle" to bring home fresh instead of processed foods.
2. "How diet soda causes weight gain"- an excellent 9 minute YouTube video explaining exactly how our food affects our pH and why and how we want to choose alkaline over acidic foods. Sharing this with family may offer simple ways for all of us together to make better food choices this holiday season. You can watch it by clicking here.
Ultimately, one sentence sums up our Fern Life eater's perspective, "It's better to pay the grocer than the doctor." Let our food be our medicine. Let our choices bring us closer to each other and the soil that nourishes us. Happy Holidays!
