Doctor of Nursing Practice | Dr. Gillian's Pick of the Month
Greetings! I am thrilled to join Fern Life Center in providing integrative healthcare services to Issaquah and beyond. Each month, I'll contribute a "pick of the month" to the newsletter. These may range from recipes to online videos to perceptions about our health or healthcare system. They will all prioritize one thing: our growing edge. Our health status is ultimately the culmination of our genetics, environment, relationships and daily encounters with food, movement and our lifestyle. Our growing edge is the place in which we have some room to make choices and maintain or change our current trajectory. Health is a journey. Thank you for having Fern Life Center accompany you on your path. For more information about me click here for my staff page on the web site.
THIS MONTH'S PICK:
TED Talk - Brene Brown: "The Power of Vulnerability." 20 minute video filmed June 2010.Click here to watch.
Brene Brown is a "researcher-storyteller" who's deep dive into the nature of connection, left her roiling in the morass of isolation, shame and fear. She went back selectively to stories of those living whole-heartedly for insight. Vulnerability was rooted at the core of shame as well as marked the birthplace of joy, creativity, belonging, and love. As we head into the dark winter season, punctuated by the light of family, friends, holidays and the turning of the year, we will have many opportunities for vulnerability, whether we want them or not. We may do well to heed Dr. Brown's advice, "You're imperfect and wired for struggle, but you are worthy of love and belonging." This is true as we think of ourselves as well as those around us. I recommend this video as a reminder of our inherent value. As we walk through our days trying to be vulnerable, courageous and connect, we will make mistakes. Remembering our indelible worthiness can serve as the signpost that our vulnerability can be our beauty, can be the very reason we will be so deeply loved.
If this struggle seems insurmountable, come in to FLC for an appointment. We have many tools at our disposal for this challenging puzzle: Ayurvedic massage, clinical hypnotherapy, supplements, dietary and lifestyle recommendations. Sometimes, this is a hard road to go alone. We're here for you. |
Autumn is Here!
Autumn is a season of deficiency and change, provoking higher stress levels. As leaves fall, nourishing and seasonal foods like pumpkin and nutmeg soothe the nervous system which help us weather the change. Cooked pumpkins are soft and comforting and with nutmeg, have a calming effect on the body, reducing stress. Wearing oneself ragged in October's social calendar can result in compromised immunity for flu season in November. Alternatively, focusing attention inwardly frees up energy to help the body prepare for winter. According to Ayurveda, keeping the nervous system stable through fall is our number one tool for maintaining strong immunity and staying healthy.
In the fall when the temperature starts to drop, the body scrambles to protect itself from heat loss. Nourishing foods seem all the more enticing while helping to refortify deficient tissue, thicken the skin, and insulate from the cold. Pumpkins, ghee and almonds build
in time for the coming winter. Ojas is Ayurveda's word for nourishment.
In addition to nourishing tissue, pumpkin chai is also a rasayana (meaning tonic). Pumpkins are orange because of beta-carotene, a precursor to Vitamin A. Beta-carotene, also in carrots, gives pumpkin an orange color and encourages healing through rejuvenation and regeneration of tissue. Orange foods with beta-carotene are generally liver tonics that clear any residue of high pitta from the summer. They also purify the blood and soothe the eyes. The cooling demulcent and laxative properties of pumpkin soothe the GI tract.
Spices make these heavy ingredients lighter for digestion, and pumpkins a bit less gassy. While all spices stimulate circulation, cloves specifically move heat to the surface of the body, warming up cold extremities. |
Pumpkin Chai
Like a steaming hot cup of liquid pumpkin pie, pumpkin chai is warm, cozy and colorful for the fall season and changing leaves. Almond milk adds heartiness. We thank our friends at Joyful Belly for this lovely recipe!
Ingredients:
Buy pureed pumpkin in a can for a shorter prep time. Canned pumpkin is also less gassy than whole pumpkins. To puree whole pumpkins, bake at 350 degrees for one hour. Baking makes the skin peel easily. Chop and mix the pumpkin with the almond milk and spices. Then puree in a blender. Bring to a boil in a saucepan and serve warm.
Happy Fall! |
