Moving Into Fall: Vata Season

Moving into Fall means that Vata will flare up again. It's time to concentrate on warming and moisturizing. Please try to do morning meditation, relaxation postures, nutmeg in milk at night, and drink/eat warming foods unless you are really hot.

Start drinking ginger tea (recipe at the bottom of page) at least three times a day. Boil a pot that can last you all day long and put it in a thermos for the road. Listening to chants (Gregorian, music by Snatam Kaur or Deva Premal, etc.) will help keep vata and pitta in line. I can't over emphasize the power of meditation and music to balance vata and pitta doshas.

Remember if you begin to feel vata aggravated to do vata reducing measures (at bottom of page). Symptoms of vata aggravation are: dryness (hair, nails, skin, mucus membranes), constipation, insomnia, anxiety, scattered mental processes, popping and aching joints. You must also remember you are a combination of doshas, not just one. Pay attention to your pitta or kapha as you protect and balance your vata during this season change.

Balancing Vata Dosha

Dry

Oil massages frequently. Avoid dry and raw foods. Cook with oil or add ghee. Use butter, warm milk, avocado, coconut milk, banana, chicken, eggs, shrimp, and fish. Follow a daily routine!

Light

Avoid windy weather, autumn season, high altitude, running, jumping, flying, and staying up late. Do not consume light foods, fast, or drink alcohol. Use heavy bedding and clothing. Daytime naps can be good if you are exhausted. Drink nutmeg milk or garlic almond milk at night. Valerian, skullcap, and vidhari are herbs that ground vata.

Cold

Avoid exposure to cold food, weather, season, or room. Keep warm and avoid air conditioning. No cold drinks, coffee, smoking, ice cream or frozen yoghurt. Eat warm, spicy food. Good spices are ginger, black pepper, cumin, mustard seeds. Kitcharee is GREAT!

Rough

No rough, raw foods. Do not sleep or sit on a rough surfaces. No black beans, pinto beans, aduki beans, or chick peas. Avoid hard, rough behavior. Be gentle, loving, and kind.

Subtle

Avoid psychedelic drugs and alcohol. Be aware of subtle emotions. Let go.

Mobile

Avoid erratic or excessive physical or mental activities. No running, jumping, swaying, swinging, or flying. Rest, read, and relax. Keep to a regular daily routine. Avoid alternating hot and cold showers.

Clear

Do not use repeated enemas, colonics, or drastic purgatives. Avoid obsessive cleaning, such as repeated baths or hand washing. Do not smoke or drink alcohol. Sesame oil enemas are moisturizing, not purgative and therefore beneficial.

Astringent

Avoid unripe or astringent foods, such as apples, pears, or pomegranates.

Vata Reducing Measures

  • Sesame Oil massage for several consecutive days (5 if possible).
  • Following the daily routine (include grounding yoga and meditation).
  • Eating warming vata reducing foods from your diet (Kicharee best).
  • Sesame Oil enemas for 5 consecutive days 1 hour before bedtime (see below).

Sesame Oil Enema:

1. Buy a Fleet's enema at the drug store (already provided for PK)

2. Empty the bottle out

3. Fill with -1/2 cup organic sesame oil

4. Place bottle in a sink full of hot water for 10 minutes to warm

5. Lubricate the tip with K-Y jelly

6. Lie on left side, insert un-capped tip into rectum and slowly squeeze contents until gone.

7. Continue to lie recumbent in relaxation (read a book, do a crossword puzzle, etc).

8. You may not see this oil until your next bowel movement the following day. The GI tract needs moisturizing and often absorbs the oil quickly.

9. Make sure you are on a toilet if you need to pass gas!

10. Wash the bottle and tip and re-use as needed.

Ginger tea - 1 quart water

  • 2 inches fresh ginger root
  • 2 mint tea bags
  • Honey (only add honey when water cooled to drinkable temperature)
  • Lemon

Boil water in a saucepan or tea pot.

Peel and mash ginger and add to the boiling water.

Reduce heat and simmer for 30 - 45 minutes, depending on how pungent you want the tea to be.

Strain and add honey for VATA and KAPHA and lemon juice for VATA if desired.

Makes 3-4 cups.
