Keesha's Corner
Summer greetings to all of our Fern Life Friends! As the summer season approaches, we must all begin to shift our minds and bodies to a new way of eating and being. Summer brings pitta inflammation and heat if we aren't careful. Many of you have already discovered this and have been in my office with migraines, joint inflammation, hives, acne, thyroid issues, adrenal burnout, weight gain because of a dysregulated pancreas, gut issues, heartburn, high blood pressure, PMS, eye infections, general irritability and skin flare ups. Make sure you begin to think COOLING foods and cooling emotional patterns. Remember your positive affirmations, meditate, do moon salutations before you go to bed, take cooling salt detox baths, get facials, and follow the guidelines outlined below. Above all, enjoy your summer! Joy is not an absence of pain or stress...it's real love manifested into feeling. 1. For pitta symptoms take cilantro shots (very cooling for pitta symptoms) · Take one bunch of fresh cilantro and divide it into 9 equal parts. This will be enough
for 3 cilantro shots a day for 3 days. · Combine in blender with ½ cup of Lily of the Desert Aloe Detox Formula and blend. 2. Enjoy cooling coconut and mint chutneys with your food. Cilantro Mint Chutney: 1 bunch fresh mint 4 oz coconut freshly grated 1/2 bunch fresh cilantro 1/2 inch piece of ginger root salt to taste 2 tablespoons lime juice 1 date 2 teaspoons coriander powder 1/8 cup onion 1/4-1/2 cup water for blending Clean the mint leaves and cilantro leaves. Add all ingredients except the water together in a blender or Blend/process and add water as you blend to make the consistency of
pancake batter.
3. Lassis · Mango Lassi: 1cup coconut milk yogurt 1 cup ice water 1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom 1 tablespoon rose water 1 mango, peeled, cut from pit and cubed or 2 ripe bananas toasted sliced almond for serving Put all ingredients, except almond, in a blender or food processor
and blend until smooth. Sprinkle with almonds and serve cold.
4. Eat raw foods as much as possible. Learn to sprout and soak your grains, nuts and
seeds. 5. Avoid heating foods (night shades, red meat, fried foods, etc.), beverages (caffeine,
alchohol, hot drinks) and spices (cayenne, pepper, onions, garlic, cinnamon, cloves,
dry ginger, etc.)
6. Use rose petal jam. 7. Drink pomegranate or cranberry juice diluted with water (4 oz juice per 32 oz water)
all day long. 8. Drink young coconut water. 9. Drink iced mint tea between meals. 10. Rose water spritz to face, neck and arms throughout the day. 11. Massage your head and feet with coconut oil before bed. 12. Spearmint, Peppermint, Lavender, Rose, and Sandalwood are all wonderful essential
oils for cooling the effects of an aggravated pitta nature. 13. Stay out of the hot midday sun. 14. Soak a washcloth in iced peppermint oil water and wear around your neck...instant
cool! 15. Use aloe and coconut oil on your skin if you do get sun. 16. Use oral supplements with Neem and topical applications of neem for pitta skin aggravations. Turmeric is nature's anti-inflammatory miracle, but it takes large doses to make a difference. We carry supercritical extracts that have been shown to reduce cancer in western medical research. 17. Curled tongue breathing (shitali) 10 rounds: During inhalation, curl up both edges of the tongue so that it forms a kind of tube. Breathe in through this tube. The air passes over the moist tongue, cooling down and refreshing the throat. To maintain moisture on the tongue, roll it back as far as possible against the palate. Do this during the entire exhalation through the nose. 18. Meditate. Taking time to center and ground will calm anyone's mind! 19. Visualize a peaceful place. Recall the most peaceful place in nature you have ever been to or can imagine on the planet. Direct you attention to the space between your eyebrows, known as the third eye. Imagine this spot as a circle (or like an eye). Pretend there are curtains over the circle and as you draw them aside you see this beautiful natural place you are thinking of. Engage with the place with all five senses. If it's the ocean, feel the warm sand between your toes and the sun on your hair, smell the salt in the air, listen to the waves and gulls and swaying palm trees, see the brightness of the water and the dolphins frolicking in the ocean, taste the salt on your tongue from the spray as the waves crash upon the beach. Spend five minutes here and you will reduce your pitta! 20. Listen to calming, sacred music (Snatam Kaur's CD "Grace" is the best I have found for this). 21. Do some calming yoga postures and finish with shivasana (corpse pose), staying in it for at least five minutes. 22. Express appreciation for everyone and everything around you. Notice what is going right and try not to attach to your challenges. Your reality begins with your thoughts. Make sure those are positive. 23. Volunteer. Serving another takes you out of your own self absorption and brings joy and emotional equanimity. Great books to learn and play with this summer! Rainbow Kitchen (Gabrielle Cousins)

Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is based on the idea that an unseen "life force energy," known as Ki in Japanese and Prana in Sanskrit and Chi in Chinese) flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one's prana is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy. There is a strong link!
Keesha Ewers, ARNP, Master of Ayurvedic Science, is a Reiki Master trained by William Rand (International Center for Reiki Training). Keesha has been using Reiki for over a decade, healing thousands of people throught her unique blend of the ancient wisdom of Ayurveda, Shamanism, Angel Therapy, Reiki, and Western medicine.

Summer Yoga
with
Diana Bonyhadi!
Welcome to summer. School is out. The sun is shining. The garden is bursting into life. And summer travel is on the mind. Regardless of whether you are taking a big trip, staying local or simply staying home and enjoying the beauty of your surroundings, I wish you many moments of peace and wellness. One of the fantastic things I love about summer is the opportunity to practice yoga outside. Sun salutations on the beach, Warrior I on top of a Mountain, and svasana by the lake. Wherever you are, there is a place for your yoga. Listen to your body and it will guide you in choosing the right asana for the right moment. My favorite - headstands in the sand facing the ocean. Watching the ocean in this pose reminds me that of the importance of perspective in all things.
And if you do find yourself traveling, cooped up in a car or on a plane, I have just put together a short "Office Yoga" practice you can do while seated. Yes, it was designed for those of us who spend many hours in front of a computer, but all the poses can be done while seated on a plane, train or automobile.
Though my teaching schedule will be reduced this summer, you will still be able to find me at Urban Oasis in Issaquah on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings. I will also be at Samena in Bellevue on Wednesday and Friday mornings. Check the schedule for class times. However, there will be no more drop-in classes at Fern Life Center until September, but I will continue to provide private sessions and small group classes upon request . Please consider the opportunity to gather some friends and go do yoga at your favorite beach or park. And of course my home studio is always available.
Enjoy your summer. Indulge in the abundant harvests of local produce. Expose yourself to the sun - but remember to put on that sunscreen. Take time to play with your family and friends. Get out in nature, and most importantly, relax and breathe.
Diana Bonyhadi, Certified Yoga Instructor, began her yogic journey in 1995. Her style reflects her commitment to wholeness through strength, flexibility, and self-awareness. Her classes draw upon the wisdom and teachings of the Hatha, Lyengar, Ayurvedic, and Vinyasa Flow yoga traditions.
Diana has studied with many exceptional teachers, including; Theresa Elliott, Kathryn Payne, Kelly Rush, Doug Keller, Aadil Palkhivala & Rodney Yee. She has been deeply moved by the teachings and wisdom of Judith Lassiter, and continues her studies of the Sanskrit sutras of Pantanjali.
Diana recently completed her second teacher training workshop in Yoga Therapy with Doug Keller, as well as an anatomy and well-ness workshop with Judith Lasater. Working with students to personalize their practice to address specific health concerns is one of Diana's particular area's of interest. Diana is certified at the 200 hour level with Yoga Alliance, a nationally recognized yoga certification organization.
