Keesha's Corner:
New Year, New You...No Excuses!
Happy New Year everyone! At this time of year we are inspired to take stock of where we are physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Many times this leads to lists of resolutions to "do better," "get back on track," or to set goals. There is a joke in the health-club industry that membership surges in January, but the actual body count in the club declines by March. Sometimes a long list of resolutions is not the way to go because you are at risk for setting yourself up for "shoulds." We all know that "shoulding all over ourselves" gets us nowhere.
I was meditating at the end of December on this and recalling my usual January cleaning and list-making frenzy and felt compelled to look at this differently. I realized that what gets me into trouble is getting lax in my "observer's mind." I fall into default thinking and perceiving if I am not constantly on alert and observing my thought patterns and filters. Default thinking is fraught with the filters of the ego, which lead to reactions from the ego-not the Higher Self. So instead of a list, I made one very clear resolve:
I will bring my intentional mind along with me everywhere I go, not leave it at home on my meditation cushion or yoga mat or journal. I will stay in touch with the observer, the Self that perceives and sees truly. What is the weapon of the ego to circumvent this? EXCUSES! Therefore, my resolve for the year and the coming years (until I reach another layer of the mind to work with) is to let go of excuses.
Think about this for a minute. Every time something is going wrong or you have strayed from your path, you will have an excuse. Every time you are out of integrity-whether it's being late for work, sleeping in and not exercising, eating poorly, going to bed late, failing to do something you promised-you have an EXCUSE. That excuse might involve blaming external circumstances, or it might involve making yourself feel bad (that's called guilt and it's useless). The cure for being out of integrity with yourself or others is a simple apology and cleaning up the problem. In our house we call this replacing your divot. (I must have been a sports fanatic in another life, because I certainly don't play golf in this one, but the expression fits well in this case.) If you break something, don't just leave it there and walk away or cry about it; fix it!
So this year watch with your Observer's Mind how many times a day you come up with excuses for the various things that aren't working in your life. Take a moment and trace it back and realize that the only reason you have a problem is because of choices you have made. It is an actual physical law that every action has an opposite and equal reaction. Karma is real. There are consequences to all of our choices and actions. If something doesn't work, fix it and make a different choice next time: NO EXCUSES! Yes, the economy is bad and the sun rarely shines. We have no control over external events, but we do have control over how we are with those events-our reactions.
Start by looking at your family dynamics. Are your relationships going well? Do you need Family Renewal? Nicole Laurent is a masterful psychotherapist and uses evidence-based cognitive behavioral therapy to change belief structures and habits that don't work anymore. Our family has benefited from her wisdom tremendously. No EXCUSES! Book an appointment to get rid of addictions and tired patterns.
How did you do over the holidays with your own self-care and nutrition? Come in and see me (Keesha) to get back on track. I am detoxing and doing PK because I didn't make stellar choices all month myself...my current lethargy and Kapha imbalance is because of my choices: NO EXCUSES!
The list is endless...take up yoga. You know Diana can help you and yoga will build your strength, lengthen your muscles, reverse the aging process, and help you manage your stress. Teach your children these skills early; sign them up for kids' yoga. Jennifer Cain is our newest yoga teacher and is building our kids and teen program. NO EXCUSES!
Our amazing chef, Julie James, can spice up your cooking with her upcoming classes! Learn how to combine and roast your own spices and create some of the fabulous recipes that she makes in our kitchen. Too busy to cook? Get out your crock pot- yes, these recipes can be made while you are away.
Are you stressed and gaining weight and wrinkles on your face? See our massage therapists and Elise Hecker, our holistic esthetician. There is no excuse for holding stress in your body! They are angels of healing and have magic hands. Your stress and wrinkles and weight will melt as your cortisol and adrenaline production go down.
Speaking of angels...Ostara will help you deepen whatever spiritual path you are on. She is offering beautiful classes at Fern Life Center right now, as well as giving her usual amazing readings. If you have always wanted to access your spiritual guides and have made excuses, stop and make an appointment to see her.
Halema is starting another spiritual awakening series at the end of January. She is a beautiful teacher of spirituality and her weekly worship services should not be missed. Join the growing number of spiritual seekers who are finding inspiration from the wisdom of many faith traditions and masters throughout time.
Are you having trouble balancing finances in these tough economic times? No EXCUSES! Budget wisely and come to the Voluntary Simplicity class, taught by Marci Sanders, at Fern Life Center to learn that you really can live with less. Materialism ever was and has been the enemy of spiritual awakening.
Do you want to awaken your body as well as you mind and spirit? Learn to move in ways you never thought possible! Take up Tribal Belly Dancing at Fern Life Center. Caryn Law will get you in touch with the feminine beauty that you ladies are...but rarely have awareness of.
How do you cultivate that Observer's Mind? PLEASE take Ajayan's meditation workshop. You will come away with the tools for stilling your mind's chatter and the ability to dip into bliss. You will have a mantra and a free pass to monthly group meditation when you are done too. No EXCUSES!
Enjoy rolling up your sleeves and getting to know your Observer. It's fun to notice and bring awareness to those blind spots (default thinking) and see them open up with new positive patterns (intentional thought) to replace them with. Have a wonderful New Year!
Many blessings of happiness to all,
Keesha
From our book shelf to yours... a must read for your book list this year!
Living Your Yoga By Judith Lasater
Why do I love this book? Oh, let me count the ways. Please give a nod to Shakespeare, and then realize that I do truly love this book. I read it and re-read it many times a year. I don't do that with many books. Yes, it is possible to practice yoga for a few hours a week. To walk into the studio and start your practice by focusing your awareness on your breath, and then proceed through your asana and pranayama practice, and finish with your meditation, and then get up, roll up your mat, and walk out the door. But really, doesn't some of that practice stay with you throughout your day? Perhaps you are just a bit more aware of your body. Maybe you notice that your ability to focus has sharpened. Maybe your breath rides more smoothly through your body. Whatever little benefit you take from your practice, it is a blessing. And then along comes Judith Lasater, to remind us that our yoga practice is really about how we walk through our daily practice of life, and not just about what we do on the mat. "To practice yoga in the deepest sense is to commit to developing awareness by observing our lives; our thoughts, our words, and our actions. There are many yoga techniques that can support us along the way, such as yoga poses, breathing practices and meditation. But these are not ends in themselves, but means to the Self." (pg. 6) Yoga is about how we live, and move and breathe in the world. The awareness that we gain from our practice on the mat is really another tool to help us increase our awareness in our daily life. Living Your Yoga is divided into 21 chapters and 3 sections. Each chapter begins with a different yoga sutra from Patanjali or a small excerpt from the Bhagavad Ghita. From there Lasater goes on to provide us with a transliteration and to explore the meanings of the sutras, through examining her own life, and helping us to examine ours. Finally, at the end of each chapter, Lasater provides practice suggestions and mantras for daily living. So, no matter how obtuse the sutra may seem at first, by the end of each chapter, you have learned it and learned how to bring it more fully into your heart and life. Using the Sutras, Lasater helps us to explore our yoga and our relationship to ourselves, our community and our world. Each chapter can stand alone, but reading the book as a whole is to develop a deeper appreciation of ourselves and our yoga. Tada drashtuh sva-rupe'vasthanam Then the seer abides in its essence Then your are one, within your true being Yoga Sutra 1:3
