A Different Perspective is an electronic publication produced by Perspective in Action, an Executive Coaching firm based in Kitchener, Ontario
Greetings!

Welcome to A Different Perspective - the first in a series of brief newsletters that will enable you to Know More in 5 Minutes by simply reading its content!

Each month, I'll crack the cover on a favourite book From My Bookshelf that you might find interesting or insightful - or both. I've already done the leg work by reading the book, I'll just pass the information on to you: key content in Author's Angle and interesting quotes in Highlight-ables.

I'll also pose a coaching question in A Question of Perspective. This will not only link to the author's thesis, but will also pertain to a practice or behaviour relating to you, and the way in which you conduct your professional career. It's a little something to mull over during the course of your day.

And, related to this question, as an Executive Coach, I'll provide a couple of pertinent points in The View From Here - points you may want to consider as you think through each month's question.

So, without further adieu, please enjoy the first issue of A Different Perspective

Highlight-ables...
"You can leave a lasting legacy only if you can imagine a brighter future, and the capacity to imagine exciting future possibilities is the defining competence of leaders."

"We weren't entirely sure every leader wanted to leave a legacy, though we were quite sure leaders left one in spite of themselves."

"The legacy perspective explicitly reveals that we make a difference. Then the only question remaining to consider is, What kind of difference do I want to make?"

A Leader's Legacy
by Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner
Authors' Angle
Building on the success of their first book, Leadership Challenge, Kouzes and Posner discuss the concept of legacy.

Through four sections and 22 essays, they discuss leadership in terms of the legacy you leave behind. Everyday activities leave an impression and legacy is in every single action you perform.

It isn't in what you're doing tomorrow, it's in what you're doing right now. What will your legacy be? When people remember you, what do you want them to remember?

This book will appeal to senior level leaders and frontline employees alike.

A Question of Perspective

If you left your organization tomorrow, what would people say about you, the leader?

The View from Here
You're already creating a legacy. Think about how people would describe you as a leader. What would they say? Would you be happy with what they say?

If not, ask youself what's keeping you from being the kind of leader you want to be.

Think about how you can change your legacy in the short-term and through long-range planning. It doesn't have to be a huge process.
