Dear

Welcome to this month's edition of the Marketing Newsletter. We have the latest view on the state of the construction market, an  article on specification sales and we are announcing our new blog with another item on specification selling.

Construction Market Activity

Against a backdrop of economic problems in the Euro zone, indicators for the UK economy continue to be concerning. Latest figures from the Office for National Statistics show construction output for Q3 to have fallen 1% compared to a year ago, but the rate of fall has slowed when compared with Q2 (just 0.2% down). Within these figures, new work performed worse and non-housing Repair & Maintenance better than the average.

The latest RICS Housing Market Survey reported that prices have continued to fall everywhere except London. However, the number of transactions increased with positive expectations.

Against this background Bovis, Taylor Wimpey and Persimmon reported positive trading results.

RIBA's Future Trends Survey also shows fragile confidence amongst architects for the next quarter. Adrian Dobson, RIBA Director of Practice, said "Overall demand for architects' services continues to be very weak in some sectors, anecdotal evidence from the survey suggests that niche markets such as high-end bespoke housing, conservation works and certain healthcare sectors remain resilient."

An initiative announced by the Government to try and stimulate the economy, via construction activity is the Growing Places Fund, with £500 million available for a range of projects that can help facilitate economic growth, jobs and housebuilding in the local area.

The poor state of the economy means that the industry has been making representations to the Chancellor in the hope that he will announce measures to revive the economy via investment in construction when he makes his Autumn Statement. Announcing plans for two new power stations, creating 1150 jobs, Mr Cameron has suggested that there will be more of these initiatives to aid the recovery.

Sustainability

How ready is your business to meet the challenges of sustainability? A recent report jointly published by the CPA and PwC surveyed 100 construction product manufacturers and suppliers to see if they considered it an opportunity, how they were developing their products to meet new needs and how they measured and communicated sustainability. Entitled Material gains in sustainability, the business case for the construction products sector the report can be downloaded from the CPA website.

The Olympic Delivery Authority, together with BRE and CPA, have recently released a Learning Legacy paper which outlines the key processes implemented to deliver sustainability objectives on the Olympic Park. It explains the activities undertaken by different parts of the supply chain to help deliver these goals and acts as a good prompt for introducing the new working practices in construction that the government is seeking to achieve.

A new low carbon design tool which has recently been launched is 'BLP Butterfly'. It is claimed that it will radically change the way the building industry calculates the cost of carbon and the impact of each decision in the design and construction of residential property. To learn more about this and establish if your products have/need to be included visit the 'BLP Butterfly' website. A programme of seminars is planned, the first of which is on 16th November.

Competitive Advantage Blog

Although I have contributed to a number of blogs in the past, I have not had my own - until now. The Competitive Advantage blog is now published, with the first article entitled Is it worth specification selling? To read more follow the link. The plan is to initially publish an article once a month about 2 or 3 weeks after this eNewsletter. If you would like to sign up to receive future blogs via a monthly email then visit our blog site and submit your email address.

Specification Selection - A Team Decision

As the government moves to introduce BIM and encourage a team approach to construction, Michael Latham must be pleased to know that his recommendations are being adopted a mere 17 years after he made them.

Back in 1994 Sir Michael Latham published "Constructing the Team - a review of procurement and contractural arrangements in the UK construction industry". Two of the key recommendations he made were that the government should take a lead and there was a need to improve the link between design and construction. 17 years later, thanks to the efforts of Chief Construction Advisor Paul Morrell, it is finally happening.

Upcoming Events

As this month's market activity report shows, times are tough for construction. So why not get some fresh ideas by taking a place at the CIMCIG Conference in London on 1st December. The subject is winning profitable work and I will be one of the speakers, suggesting how environmental sustainability can be turned into competitive advantage.
