Greetings!
Welcome to this month's edition of the Marketing Newsletter. As we approach the general election there is some good news from the industry, although there are still problem areas. Sustainability remains centre stage with the recent publication of the Low Carbon Construction interim findings. This has the potential to be hugely significant to the industry.
If house building is one of your market sectors we have details of research and seminars available to help you. There is also a last chance to book onto our Spring Marketing course. |
| Construction Market Activity |
For the first time in many months we have some good news for the construction industry with the Construction Products Barometer from Ernst and Young and the Construction Products Association reporting that the decline in overall building product sales stabilised in the first quarter of 2010 and construction output increased in March for the first time in 25 months. RICS Housing Market Survey also reported that activity rose faster in March than any time since May 2007. This good news was supported by the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply's monthly survey of contractors and construction purchasers.
Do not get too excited as this only shows that the decline has come to an end. There is a marked difference between heavy side manufacturers who experienced a continuing decline, due to the bad weather in January, and light side manufacturers who saw a significant rise in sales. Both sectors expect a rise in sales during the next quarter, although this is tempered with an expectation of public sector spending cuts. A slowdown is already in progress as the government has implemented a freeze on public bodies making any new spending decisions or signing contracts on previously committed funding until after the general election. This will affect Partnership for Schools and the Homes & Communities Agency.
Supporting the news of growth, property consultancy Knight Frank reported strong demand for Central London office space in Quarter 1 which was more than double that of the same quarter last year.
But don't get too excited as the ECA report that electrical contractors have reported a fall in workload for the seventh quarter in succession. The overall figures disguise a lot of variations with smaller contractors generally faring better than the larger companies. Although still declining, the fall in the level of enquiries is slowing. |
| Sustainability |
We saw a significant step forward for the adoption of sustainability by the construction industry last month with the publishing of the interim findings from the Low Carbon Construction Innovation and Growth Teams. Chaired by the Chief Construction Advisor, Paul Morrell, and comprising a number of industry leaders. This report provides a number of recommendations which, if adopted, will help move us towards low carbon construction. Importantly it also reinforces the previous work of Letham and Egan in the adoption of integrated teams to bring down the cost of construction as well as proposing a more integrated regime for regulations.
You can read a summary of the report and get background to the 'Warmer Homes, Greener Homes' paper in Competitive Advantages report Marketing Sustainability in Construction. Alternatively why not book a place on our half day seminar, priced at only £95 + VAT, Marketing Building Products into a Sustainable Market being held at the Building Centre on 29th April. |
| Housing Market |
The findings of RICS Housing Market Survey are supported by Competitive Advantage's own survey, Housebuilder Watch, published today. The report found that 31% of national and 43% Regional housebuilders surveyed said that Starts were up in the quarter just ended. National housebuilders expect to improve upon this for the coming quarter, although optimism varies between the different developers. The report is available for purchase at £250 + VAT, either online or email your order to Chris Ashworth.
If the residential sector is important to you why not book a place on CIMCIG's seminar Profiting from Housing Growth, being held at the Building Centre on 11th May. Chaired by Ben Roskrow of Housebuilder Publications a number of key speakers will be giving advice on the opportunities as well as providing their perspective on the impact of the newly elected government on the housing market. |
| Marketing in the Construction Industry |
The recent volcanic eruption has disrupted many people's travel plans and as a result we were forced to postpone our popular course Marketing in the Construction Industry. This course is designed for the marketing professional working for Manufacturer or Supplier at any level in a marketing department. It puts marketing theory into a construction context and gives details of industry specific communications channels and sources of information for market research. Now rescheduled for 13th May we are still taking bookings for places. |
