Chamber-Supported Workers' Compensation Reform Bill Gains Traction
Last week, the Michigan House of Representatives began hearing testimony on Michigan Chamber supported legislation to reform Michigan's Workers' Compensation Act (House Bill 5002). The goal of these changes is to keep workers' compensation premiums affordable for job providers and generally make Michigan more economically competitive.
Personal injury attorneys, who see the proposed changes as a threat to their pocketbooks, are engaged in an all-out effort to stop the bill. The Michigan Chamber continues to counter their attacks, advocating for passage of this bill which will update, reform and modernize key areas of the law and provide increased certainty for employees and employers.
For too long, the workers' compensation law has depended upon what judge hears a case, creating inconsistency, confusion and ambiguities resulting in high premiums for job providers. This disarray is exactly what personal injury attorneys desire: higher confusion and higher costs to employers. HB 5002 would put an end to the flip-flopping.
This week, The Detroit News published an editorial in support of the legislation. Please join the Michigan Chamber in the fight to pass HB 5002 by clicking here to contact your lawmaker today in support of this key piece of legislation.
