Welcome to the BABC-New England Newsletter
From the Executive Director

Some good news on exports. Massachusetts ranked 14th in the US, and first in NE, with $26.3 billion in international exports in 2010. This represents an 11.3 percent increase from the previous year's export value, while national exports increased by 21.0 percent. Total exports from NE also grew 17.5 percent, indicating a positive trend.

-       Computer and electronic parts accounted for most of the exports coming in at 28.5%, the least being electrical equipment, appliances, and component at 2.1%.

-       The top five export destinations in 2010 were (in order): the UK, Canada, China mainland, Japan, Germany.

-       The UK was our top trading partner in 2009 and 2010 and replaced Canada, our top trading partner in 2008.

Tech City

In November 2010, Prime Minister David Cameron announced plans for 'Tech City' which will be Europe's largest technology hub occupying East London's 2012 Olympic space following the games.

Thus far, Tech City has several partners committed to developing the technology hub such as Google, Facebook, Twitter and Intel. These companies will have a presence within the hub while companies such as BT and Barclays are also taking part in developments. Additionally, the Technology Strategy Board has been accepting applications from competing digital startup companies to provide £100,000 to ten successful applicants. Due to the high volume of impressive applications, the original budget of £1,000,000 has been increased to £2,000,000. This latest budgetary increase for small businesses proposes to fulfill Mr. Cameron's goals of supporting innovative companies of tomorrow and creating new, sustainable growth in the UK. more

Kate and Will

The newlyweds have gone straight to work promoting Britain's tech and show business scenes and finding new ways of developing jobs in America and Britain. Following their trip to Canada, William and Catherine flew to Los Angeles where they attended a reception hosted by UK Trade and Investment, British Consulate General, and were welcomed by the UK Ambassador to the US, Sir Nigel Sheinwald. As part of their three-day trip to the US, they first visited the New Media Summit where the couple viewed the technology on display such as the HP TouchPad, on which William is said to have Googled Birmingham's football club, Aston Villa.  They also attended the inaugural BAFTA "Brits to Watch" event at the Belasco Theatre.

Interview with the Ambassador

Sir Nigel Sheinwald, the UK Ambassador to the US, recently spent some time speaking with the Huffington Post to discuss the "extraordinarily effective alliance" between the two nations. Sir Nigel reflected on both the cultural and political relationship that has been forged over the past two centuries. Leaving his post as UK Ambassador to the US, Sir Nigel and his family are due to return to England in January 2012.
