UK Election Race Begins As PM Brown Confirms May 6th Date
Tuesday, April 6th: " Prime Minister Gordon Brown made the short journey from Downing Street to Buckingham Palace to ask Her Majesty the Queen to dissolve Parliament. So the starting pistol for the UK 2010 General Election Campaign has been officially fired ", write British Ambassador, Sir Nigel Sheinwald.British Ambassador's Blog

Political leaders have headed off on the campaign trail after Prime Minister Brown announced the UK General Election would be held on Thursday, May 6. PM Brown said he would seek a "clear" mandate to continue the "road to recovery", as labour bids for a fourth term. David Cameron, whose Conservative Party has been ahead in the polls, said they offered "hope" and a "fresh start". Nick Clegg, leader of the UK's 3rd biggest party, the Liberal Democrats, said only they offered "real change". BBC News

Following tradition, the Prime Minister asks the Monarch to dissolve Parliament by Royal Proclamation. The Proclamation also orders the issue of the formal Writs of Election which require an election to be held in each constituency. The election is held 17 working days after the date of the Proclamation, as regulated by the Representation of the People Act 1983. Since 1935, every general election has been held on a Thursday. The Cabinet Office imposes Purdah before elections. This is a period of roughly 6 weeks in which Government Departments are not allowed to communicate with members of the public about any new or controversial Government initiatives. General Election 2010 - Voting from Overseas

British citizens living overseas can vote in UK general elections and European Parliamentary elections in the UK. Every British citizen who has been registered to vote in the UK within the last 15 years is eligible to vote in UK Parliamentary (general) elections and European Parliamentary elections in the UK.

To be eligible to vote in the general election on 6 May 2010, you must register as an overseas voter by 20 April. For more information and to download a registration form, visit the Electoral Commission's About My Vote website.
