Swap Meet

Don't forget bring your good quality photo equipment to the swap meet held during our meetings.  No charge.

Guests can buy but need to pay an entry fee of $20 if they wish to sell anything.  If you are looking for a particular item and want to get it out to the membership use PPLAC's Facebook site and post what you need.  Someone may have the item and would want to sell it.  When selling items it helps to have an index card next to the item with the price and your name.  Also, if you really want to show that you are competitive bring a recent Craigslist  or on-line seller like B and H price list etc.

Here are some ground rules:

1) PPLAC members may buy and sell personally-owned items for free as a benefit of membership
2) Non-members may buy for free, but must pay $20 to offer personally-owned items for sale
3) This swap meet is for personally-owned items only.  Commercial goods and services may be sold at PPLAC meetings only by speakers and sustaining members.
4) All items should be labeled with the seller's name, asking price and any other information you feel would add value or help you sell your item
5) No junk - please sell with integrity

Tip: Bring comparable prices from major companies such as Adorama, Abe's of Maine, B&H, Samy's or Craigslist to make it easy for your "customer" to see the value of your item and what a deal they are getting.

Congratulations to
Jim Akers!

Jim Akers garnered first place in the photojournalism category at the Santa Clarita Valley Photographers Association fall print competition, November 10, 2009.

The 16x20 print "Getty Fire" won with a score of 85 which was the second highest score of the 79 photos submitted.  Jim also entered two other prints which merited.  Jim said he took the suggestions of the judges from a recent PPLAC print competition, made the changes and resubmitted them in the hopes that he would improve his scores at Santa Clarita.  Obviously, his hard work and effort paid off.

End of Year Print Competition

As we wrap up 2009, Irene Benavente from our print competition committee is working to finalize judging for the Aurora awards (image of the year in each category) and Photographer of the Year.

If you have a print that merited in 2009 April, July or October print competition, please take the following two actions:

1) Please bring your 2009 merit prints to our next meeting in Culver City on November 19 and leave them with Irene for year-end judging and possible inclusion in our affiliate print display at Pro Photo Expo West in Pasadena in February.  If you can't make it to the November 19 meeting, please contact Irene Benavente at 310-657-4175 and make arrangements to get your prints to her.

2) Please forward a low-resolution (72 ppi) version of all your merit images to Alicia Bravo at webmaster@pplac.com so she can post your images in our PPLAC online gallery.

Greetings!

Bob YoungWow!  Here we are in November already and the holiday season is almost upon us.  For many of us (myself included), this is a very busy time of year.  However, before I get too busy, I want to thank the judges who worked with us last month to make our print competition such a wonderful event.  Ronna Schary, Anne Hutton and Tim Mathiesen generously gave us their time and expertise while providing some great feedback for last month's print competition.  As always, this was a wonderful learning experience for all who attended.

If you are new to PPLAC and haven't participated in print competition, you're missing out on an unparalleled learning opportunity.  Simply stated, participating in print competition will help you take your work to the next level.  If you would like some guidance about how, why and when to participate in print competition, please don't hesitate to ask any Board member for assistance.

And speaking of Board members, I am pleased to make the following announcements for our Executive Board:
- Karen Nakamura has accepted the position of Vice President on the PPLAC Board beginning with the 2010-2011 term, bringing with her years of experience as Treasurer.  Karen will be responsible for our programs, including speakers, workshops, studio shares and photo safaris.  We've got a great speaker lineup for 2010, which Karen will augment with a series of studio shares and workshops throughout the year to give you plenty of learning opportunities.
- Sharon Lobel has accepted the position of Treasurer on our Board beginning with the 2010-2011 term.  Sharon's business savvy and experience with Quickbooks makes her uniquely qualified to fill the void left by Karen's move to VP.  Over the next several months, Karen will work with Sharon to get her up to speed on PPLAC's finances and bookkeeping, and migrate us to the Quickbooks platform.
- Sharon's move leaves the position of Secretary open, which will be filled by Biljana Milasin.  As one of our newer PPLAC members, Biljana brings a fresh perspective and new ideas and we are delighted to have her onboard.

And filling out the rest of the Board . . .
- Irene Benavente has agreed to co-chair our Print Competition committee with Bob Young.  Irene has been an integral part of PPLAC's print competition for a number of years and we are delighted to have her leadership, talent and experience on the Print Competition committee.

Please join me in welcoming all of our new Board members.

We still have the position of Editor open on the Board.  The Editor will work closely with Alicia Bravo, our Website and Newsletter Director, to provide content for our newsletter and other key communications for our member community.  Please contact me if you are interested in filling this position.

I look forward to seeing everyone at our last general meeting of the year on Thursday, November 19.

Lighting is Exciting!

This program is designed to teach many of the principles of lighting to apply to a variety of situations. You will leave with a much better understanding of "quality" of light and how it can affect your work. Handout(s) will accompany a PowerPoint program and there will be some demonstrations of practical lighting.

During this slide-illustrated program you will learn:

  • Many details needed to successfully complete the CPP exam.
  • The "master's secret" to efficient portraiture on location
  • The simple way to forever remember lighting ratios
  • "Masculine" and "feminine" lighting and posing simplified
  • How to use the "Edge" of the light both in studio and on location.
