A HUGE thank you to Amy Cantrell!
|

Two days before Michael Taylor was scheduled to present to our PPLAC meeting on September 24, Jim Brammer, our President, received a call saying that Michael had a mix up in his calendar and would not be able to speak to our group because he would be out of town. Jim immediately put in a call to our very own Amy Cantrell, who graciously agreed to step in and speak to our group. It turns out that PPLAC was the winner in all of this as Amy delivered one heck of a program, discussing everything from on-location lighting to the use of some cool new light modifiers.
Many thanks to Amy for stepping in on such short notice and delivering an informative, educational and inspirational program.

Greetings!
This month I have the distinct pleasure of introducing our new Print Competition chair, Bob Young. In addition to having keen lighting skills and amazing detail in his work, Bob is also master of several tools that have become the de facto standard in our industry: Photoshop, Lightroom and the Wacom Tablet. He has been using Photoshop for over 13 years and his depth of experience is amazing. More recently, Bob has also embraced Lightroom as his tool of choice for cataloging and managing the many images he shoots. At our last Board meeting on October 1, Bob suggested that we implement a new segment during our print competition events called "Ask Bob". Here's how it works: If you have a question about the use of Photoshop, Lightroom or Wacom , whether it's something as simple as the use of layer masks in Photoshop or cataloging and keywording Lightroom, or the sophisticated application of a specific tool in Photoshop, Lightroom or the Wacom Tablet, simply send a note to Bob at bypjsm@sbcglobal.net. If Bob can answer your question, he will let you know that he has the answer but you'll have to come to the next PPLAC print competition event to hear his answer. During the first 30 minutes of each print comp meeting, from 7:00 to 7:30 p.m. Bob, and other Photoshop/Lightroom/Wacom experts from within our PPLAC member community, will answer your questions. I hope you will take advantage of our upcoming print competition at the October meeting. Whether you come to "Ask Bob", enter prints, or just come to observe the judging, print competition is a wonderful member benefit and learning experience that will definitely help you improve your photographic artistry. I look forward to seeing on October 22! Jim Brammer PPLAC President

PRINT COMPETITION - General Meeting
Thursday, October 22nd, 2009
At our last Board Meeting on October 1st, the PPLAC board voted to reduce the number of print competition categories to a total of five. You may recall that, for Digicom, we had expanded the number of categories to align with PPC, resulting in a total of 14 categories. Even though we had a very high number of entrants in the July Digicom, we had several instances where there was only one image in a category. Our print competition rules require a minimum of three images to be entered in a given category before a "Best of Category" award can be given. As such, those entrants with only one image in a category were not able to compete for Best of Category. Also, the larger number of categories makes the management and administration of our print competition event extremely cumbersome and time consuming. Here are the five categories for PPLAC print competition: PORTRAIT Photographs of brides or weddings may NOT be entered in this category. WEDDING All photographs pertaining to bridal portraits from a wedding day event must be entered in this category. NATURE/LANDSCAPE Landscape, wildlife, scenic, or nature photographs. ILLUSTRATIVE Includes people or photojournalistic images that do not fall into another category or commercial images without a tear sheet. Photographs of brides NOT taken on the wedding day must be entered into this category. COMMERCIAL Must be from an actual commercial assignment and must be accompanied by a tear sheet enclosed in an 8 ½ x 11 inch envelope and attached to the top center of the back of the print. This is in the event a judge needs clarification as to how the image was used. Other Print Competition Reminders Here are some quick reminders about PPLAC print competition rules (complete rules and additional information on print competition may be found at www.pplac.com in the members only section). 1) No entry will be eligible that has been made under the supervision of an instructor or as a class assignment. Students should submit images made outside of class. 2) No two photographs (unless entered by different makers) shall be of the same subject. 3) Makers of images submitted for print competition must be PPLAC members in good standing. Non members are not eligible to submit images for print competition. 4) Prints must be unframed. 5) Print size should have a minimum of 80 square inches mounted on a 16x20 mount board. Mount board should be no less than 1/8" and no more than 3/8" thick. No print may be mounted on masonite or canvas. Overlays and underlays may be used as long as total thickness does not exceed 3/8" thick. 6)A maximum of six (6) prints per member may be entered per competition. 7) In order to identify and list entries, all prints must be titled. A registration form must be taped to the back of each print with the following information clearly marked: - Name of maker - Title of print - Category of print - Date of competition 8) Orientation may be either portrait or landscape. 9) Prints without a completely filled out registration form will be disqualified. 10) Completed registration forms must be placed with the correct orientation on the back of the print (if the form is placed upside down the print will be presented that way). 11) All submitted prints must be accompanied by a digital file for archiving purposes.

General Meeting
Lighting is Exciting!
This program is designed to teach many of the principles of lighting to apply to a variety of situations. You will leave with a much better understanding of "quality" of light and how it can affect your work. Handout(s) will accompany a PowerPoint program and there will be some demonstrations of practical lighting.
During this slide-illustrated program you will learn:
- Many details needed to successfully complete the CPP exam.
- The "master's secret" to efficient portraiture on location
- The simple way to forever remember lighting ratios
- "Masculine" and "feminine" lighting and posing simplified
- How to use the "Edge" of the light both in studio and on location.

Announcing PPLAC's Monthly Photography Swap Meet
Do you have extra photography equipment or supplies you want to get rid of and make some money while you're at it?
Beginning with the October PPLAC General Meeting, we are starting our monthly Photography Swap Meet. Bring your good- to mint-condition photography equipment or supplies to trade or sell at PPLAC's monthly meetings. It's better than Craigslist because you are dealing with people you know and see on a monthly basis!
Bring your cameras, lenses, lights, reflectors, bags, chargers, computers, software, frames, posing boxes, stands, backgrounds, props, model wardrobes and other photography-related items. Tables will be set up in the back of the room where you may place your item(s), which should be clearly labeled and priced. Time for the swap meet will be from 7:00 to 7:30 p.m. before our general meeting starts, and after the end of the meeting. Please note that breaks during the evening are reserved for our speakers and sponsoring members to show and sell their wares.
Here are some ground rules:
1) PPLAC members may buy and sell personally-owned items for free as a benefit of membership 2) Non-members may buy for free, but must pay $20 to offer personally-owned items for sale 3) This swap meet is for personally-owned items only. Commercial goods and services may be sold at PPLAC meetings only by speakers and sustaining members. 4) All items should be labeled with the seller's name, asking price and any other information you feel would add value or help you sell your item 5) No junk - please sell with integrity Tip: Bring comparable prices from major companies such as Adorama, Abe's of Maine, B&H, Samy's or Craigslist to make it easy for your "customer" to see the value of your item and what a deal they are getting.
