Thank you Patricia Mathis!

At our August 27 general meeting, PPA Master Photographer Patricia Mathis delivered a wonderful program entitled "From Ordinary to Extraordinary".  Drawing on her training as an artist and her award-winning photography experience, Patricia taught us to see art the way an artist sees it, with attention to the classic elements and principles of design.  As Patricia explained, "Once you have trained your eye to view an image the way an artist sees it, you can also train your clients to "see" the same way so they can appreciate the skill it takes to create truly extraordinary images."  Many thanks to Patricia for a truly educational and inspirational program.

Lighting is Exciting!

This program is designed to teach many of the principles of lighting to apply to a variety of situations. You will leave with a much better understanding of "quality" of light and how it can affect your work. Handout(s) will accompany a PowerPoint program and there will be some demonstrations of practical lighting.

During this slide-illustrated program you will learn:

  • Many details needed to successfully complete the CPP exam.
  • The "master's secret" to efficient portraiture on location
  • The simple way to forever remember lighting ratios
  • "Masculine" and "feminine" lighting and posing simplified
  • How to use the "Edge" of the light both in studio and on location.

Greetings!

Bob Young
I'd like to take a moment to thank you for the allowing me the opportunity to serve as president of this wonderful organization.  PPLAC has been serving industry professionals since 1960 as the premier organization for professional photographers in the Greater Los Angeles area.  I am honored and proud to follow in the footsteps of the many talented and inspirational past presidents who have led this organization and I am committed to continuing their momentum.

Next year we will celebrate the 50th anniversary of PPLAC.  As we look forward to this milestone, we have a series of wonderful programs planned for the coming months.  At this month's general meeting Michael Taylor will deliver a program entitled "Shooting Anywhere, Anytime".  Michael's passion in portrait photography is the location portrait and he'll show us how to compose and light environmental portraiture.  In October we have the last installment of our print competition for 2009.  Don't forget, if you had an image that merited in July's DigiCom, you need to print it and submit it in the October print competition in order to receive your merit.  In November, Sam Gardner will deliver a program entitled "Lighting is Exciting", which will focus on the "quality" of light and how it can affect your work.

We are in the process of booking speakers for 2010 so "watch this space" for updates on the  exciting, educational and inspirational programs coming your way, or check the "Events" tab on our Web site at www.PPLAC.com

GENERAL MEETING

All The World is a Studio...

Michael Taylor's passion in portrait photography is the location portrait. This has been the centerpiece of his style since his days as a graduate of Brooks Institute. This style was developed by his work with Paul Skipworth and Skipworth studios. Paul Skipworth himself was greatly influenced by the grand American portrait lineage of Bacharach and Gittings. In this same manner, Michael Taylor works to tell a story about his subject through the use of location and environment.

Through the use of his concept of wall of light to the idea of great lighting from nine to five Michael will greatly expand the WAY and the WHERE you will be able to work to create great images no matter if you are a portrait, wedding or commercial shooter. Through talking about the concepts of contrast, texture, and other visual characteristics he will help to understand how you bring excitement into your image making. Through coming to this seminar YOU WILL better understand what you need to look for to either find or create situations that will make you a better image maker...NOT A LUCKY image taker.

Don't you want to learn how to make images that are great BEFORE the photoshop fix-it.

"Michael's portraits take my breath away." Helen Yancy, Past President of PPA

"Michael is the finest environmental photographer in the world." Ray Lowe, President, British Institute Of Photography

"Michael is the God of light. He is the finest I have ever seen." Hanson Fong

"Possibly the finest traditional portrait photographer in the states." Eastman Kodak

PATRICIA MATHIS WORKSHOP.
From Ordinary to Extraorinary

Monday, September 14th, 2009

10:00AM-5:00PM

Understanding and applying the elements and principles of Design

Using interactive lectures and discussions, Patricia's workshop will walk you through the basic elements and principles of design as she examines artwork from many well-known artists. You will learn to "see" what those
artists saw and better understand the process of creation to improve the artistic value of your final images.

Patricia will show you how to transform a great capture into a work of fine art by demonstrating post-production techniques in Photoshop and NiK Software. The intent of this workshop is not to teach "Photoshop tips and
tricks", but you will learn some very effective and efficient tips when retouching images. We will not be photographing in class so no need to bring your camera but feel free to bring your computer and Patricia will provide a "control" set of images that the class can work on as a group.

Space is limited. Register today! Romance

1st place winner

Quote from Alicia

Alicia Bravo
"I feel so grateful and happy to have won 1st place for my wedding photo! I feel like I'm in a dream! I truly believe I would not be in this position, had I not joined PPLAC. I joined about a year ago, when Julian Climaco recommended it to me. Everyone made me feel welcome. As members, we were all encouraged to submit photos to print competitions, even if only as a learning experience. I really appreciate the judges who critiqued my images, for they have required me to improve my skills. PPLAC members, like Bob Young, Irene Benevante, Jim Brammer and Karen Nakamura gave me plenty of support. They told me not to give up and gave me advice on getting this photograph to an award winning level. I have learned so much from the monthly speakers, as well as, the seminars. I have made friends and now I have so much more confidence!"

Bob Young Takes Disney Concert Hall
390 images for One Print???

Disney Concert Hall Photo

Disney Concert Hall PhotoHow did he do it?

To achieve the resolution for a print of this quality and size it was necessary to shoot 21 separate areas (that was, for what I call the back plate) of the stage, choir and orchestra to make one large composite and piece all of the images together like a large jigsaw puzzle, of which CS4 does a very good job, then it took an additional 48 images of the choir orchestra and principal singers to get the final image.

Over sixty retouching hours have gone into this image to make it look as if the orchestra and choir posed for it. None of the choir or orchestra members knew that this was going to be taken so I had to shoot each section separately, when each section was sitting still.  Each image was shot using Canons live view feature to get critical focus at the different focal distance as the lens was at f4 on a long lens.  Being a live performance, it was only possible to shoot between pieces and pauses so as not to disturb the audience.  The equipment used was a Canon 1D MK III and the 70-200mm 2.8 IS lens shot at 1600 ISO, 200s @ f4, for the bright areas of the stage. 100s @ f4 for the choir in the center and higher, over 390 images where shot in order to have enough heads and instruments to choose from.

The Limited Edition "Giclee" prints are being printed by MFA Talon in El Segundo who are masters in fine art printing.
