President's Message - 2012-2013
I'm very excited to be serving the membership as President of SDIW this coming year. Every member is important to us and involvement is the key to getting the most and the best out of SDIW. My theme for this year is "BEE Involved". Bees are very social creatures and the survival of the bee hive is dependent upon each bee doing their part. I want everyone to BEE as INVOLVED as you can. Whether it's Bee-ing on a committee or just attending meetings I want to BEE sure you all feel just how important each of you is to SDIW.
I'm very excited about the incoming board as we have many New-Bees (newer members) who have agreed to be involved and almost every committee has a co-chair so we are really heading into a year full of team work. If you are not involved and want to be, it's not too late. We have many opportunities throughout the year that don't require a long term commitment or consistent attendance at the board meetings.
Community Action has a breast cancer walk in the fall. Ways & Means will be having a golf tournament that will need lots of volunteers. So if you want to BEE involved, there will BEE lots of opportunities throughout the year.
Our Joint Board meeting in June was great and this year we will be having a "new member retreat" in August. Everyone is welcome to come, so it will BEE a chance to come and learn more about SDIW. Watch for the flyer that will BEE emailed out in the coming weeks. We will also BEE expanding our mentor program to make it easier for new members to get involved and get their questions answered.
I so look forward to the coming year and if you have questions or I can assist you in any way, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

Community Action - Cathy Burkhardt, Sandra Richardson & Mechelle Smalley Co-Chairs
We have a great year planned for SDIW members to make a big impact in our community!
With the help of Nancy Trejo, we will continue to serve lunch for our address-less neighbors at Rachel's Women Center. SDIW has been a proud Rachel's House supporter for over FIVE years. In addition to cash donations, clothing drives, food drives and contributing items from the shelter's extensive wish list we have been regularly serving lunch on Saturdays. If you can volunteer please contact Nancy Trejo.
Did you know that without us picking up the food, preparing the kitchen, and serving the meals to our friends at the shelter they would not have a lunch that day? Rachel's House has a small staff on weekends with very limited transportation to pick up the food from Father Joe's kitchen. Thanks to our dedicated and reliable efforts, anywhere from 30 to 60 women receive a warm meal - in many cases their only meal - that day.
Serving lunch at Rachel's House takes less than an hour out of our busy lives but makes an incredible impact within our community. We would like to encourage all SDIW members to keep Rachel's Women's Center, The Tomorrow Program, and OPT Invest in mind for donations of paper products, personal care items, and gently used clothing.
Another, more recent tradition we are continuing is our participation as a team in the annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event in Balboa Park. Mark your calendars for Sunday, October 21, 2012 at 7 a.m!! Our SDIW Team page has been set up as SDIW - San Diego Insurance Women. Click the link to donate, register and to invite your friends! All of us have been touched by Breast Cancer in one way or another and this is a great opportunity to join the fight for finding a cure. Our fundraising goal is $3,000.00 - just a little more than double of what we raised as a team last year - and we're aiming for 30+ walking members! Will you be there? Look for more information throughout the summer!
In Spring of 2013, we hope to encourage you to reduce your carbon foot print by getting involved with a local environmental organization. To make up for all the paper we use in our jobs, we would like to participate as a team in another walk and/or participate in tree planting, trail clean-up, riverbed clean-up or any other fun event that enables us to enjoy the outdoors while making a difference and preserving our environment for generations to come. Please stay tuned for more information throughout the year. Meanwhile, Think Green!
We look forward to serving as your Community Action Team this coming year and we would like to encourage you to bring any of your community service involvements to our attention to be included as brief announcements in our monthly committee reports. SDIW is a very caring and highly involved group with a large network at our fingertips to make the world a better place. You never know who might join you in your efforts, walks, events and fundraising endeavors. We look forward to making a difference! Remember, "We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give." Winston Churchill

Rachel's House Schedule - Nancy Trejo
I am taking over the scheduling of volunteers to serve lunch at Rachel's Women's Center. Many thanks to Nancy Ladd for organizing our efforts with Rachel's over the last several years!
Our schedule is filled for July, but I still need a few volunteers for August. Please let me know if you can help out. A big thank you to everyone who has already signed up to volunteer! Click here for the July/August schedule.
Lots of vacations are taken during the summer months, so if you will be staying in a hotel this summer, one easy way of helping Rachel's, is to save all of your unused amenities. You can give them to me at our meeting, and I will be happy to take them to Rachel's. If you're traveling for business with co-workers, ask them to save their amenities too. I collected a full bag at my last meeting!
I'll be reaching out to Antoinette Fallon, the Director of Rachel's Women's Center, to see what other things we can do to help this year. Times are tough for everyone; and with budget cuts, programs like Rachel's really have a hard time making ends meet. Everything we do, both individually and collectively, makes a difference for someone less fortunate. Let's keep making positive differences together!
As always, thank you for your continued thoughtfulness and support of Rachel's House!

MEAL AND REST BREAK OBLIGATIONS CLARIFIED BY CALIFORNIA SUPREME COURT
On April 12, 2012, the California Supreme Court issued its long awaited opinion in Brinker Restaurant Corp. v. Superior Court. Of prime importance to California employers, the Supreme Court held that with regard to the statutory obligation to provide non-exempt employees with meal/rest breaks, "an employer's obligation is to relieve its employee of all duty, with the employee thereafter at liberty to use the meal period for whatever purpose he or she desires, but the employer need not ensure that no work is done."
The Supreme Court held that substantial evidence of the employer's uniformpolicy with regard to rest breaks supported certification of a rest break subclass."The rest break policy was established at Brinker's corporate headquarters; it is equally applicable to all Brinker employees" and under "the written policy, employees receive one 10-minute rest break per four hours worked." The actual language of Brinker's policy read: "If I work over 3.5 hours during my shift, I understand that I am eligible for one ten minute rest break for each four hours that I work." Hello Region VIII Members!
As RVP Kathleen Kerstenbeck's term winds down, please join me in thanking her for the fine job she has done representing Region VIII over the last year. Her efforts and dedication on behalf of Region VIII have been greatly appreciated!

If you plan to attend the conference and are willing to serve on a committee, please complete the attached volunteer form and send back to me, no later than July 18, 2012. Click here for volunteer form. This will help Lauri greatly in her planning efforts.
