President's Message
So we just moved our clocks forward. What a great time. Spring has sprung and with that it just seems like we all have a renewed energy. Not like we need much. Our last few months have been filled with all sorts of activity.

Our January meeting was our LinkedIn meeting where Kathleen Kerstenbeck taught a class on how to use LinkedIn. Her company, Kerstenbeck Photography, also took head shots at an earlier meeting for our members to use on our LinkedIn sites. Social media is here to stay so this was such an important meeting, giving us all insights on how to use it and take advantage of it. This was also our membership drive meeting and we did gain 4 new members that evening. Very exciting!!!

In our February meeting, it was great to see what is going on in our government. Pam Legge caught us up on what is going on with the legislation of healthcare. There's so much involved in it. It's definitely a topic that we have to stay abreast of because of so many changes.

SDIW just recently had their Annual Golf Tournament at Sail Ho. We had such a great turnout and everyone had a great time. We thank all the sponsors & everyone who donated prizes. We had so many donations.

We ended March with Dr. Hugh Smith as our speaker on Biocytonics. He is an internationally recognized researcher in mycoplasma and cell wall deficient form research. He observes and analyzes living blood in order to diagnose cures for many conditions. Amazing subject to look into if you haven't heard of it...here is Dr. Hugh Smith's site.

Don't forget. Regional in Hawaii is around the corner. There's still time to make plans to go. And for all who are going, I can't wait to see you there!!!

And of course, if you have any questions, you can contact me directly at Gia Blanco.

Gently used clothing is also greatly appreciated as the ladies can earn points doing chores at the shelter to shop in the Rachel's Boutique. This gives them a great sense of accomplishment, increases their self esteem, and enables them to get items they need... All GOOD!!!!!

Thanks to each of you for you continued support of this program.

Community Action - Be The Missing Piece!

San Diego Insurance Women put together a team to walk in the "2012 Race for Autism". Thanks to everyone who signed up to walk/run, recruited others to walk/run, or made a donation to our team!  You have made a difference and are "Part of the Missing Piece"!

Once considered rare, autism now affects as many as one in 110 children in the United States with a new diagnosis every 20 minutes.  By participating in this walk, SDIW and our friends and families help to improve the quality of life for thousands of San Diego children.  100% of the donations of this walk go back into the San Diego Community!

California Transparency in Supply Chains Act of 2010 (SB 657)

On January 1, 2012, the disclosure requirements of the California Transparency in Supply Chains Act of 2010, Senate Bill 657 ("SB 657" or the "Act") take effect. These requirements, discussed below, apply to all retail sellers or manufacturers doing business in the state of California with USD 100 million or more in annual worldwide gross revenues.

Requirements of SB 657

SB 657 requires retail sellers and manufacturers to disclose their efforts to combat slavery and human trafficking and to eliminate it from their direct supply chains. Specifically, covered retailers and manufacturers must, at a minimum, disclose to what extent, if any, the retailer, seller or manufacturer does each of the following:

1. Engages in verification of product supply chains to evaluate and address risks of human trafficking and slavery. The disclosure shall specify if the verification was not conducted by a third party.

2. Conducts audits of suppliers to evaluate supplier compliance with company standards for trafficking and slavery in supply chains. The disclosure shall specify if the verification was not an independent, unannounced audit.

3. Requires direct suppliers to certify that materials incorporated into the product comply with the laws regarding slavery and human trafficking of the country or countries in which they are doing business.

4. Maintains internal accountability standards and procedures for employees or contractors failing to meet company standards regarding slavery and trafficking.

5. Provides company employees and management, who have direct responsibility for supply chain management, training on human trafficking and slavery, particularly with respect to mitigating risks within the supply chains of products.

Wine & Nine

Thanks to everyone who helped make SDIW's 4th Annual "Wine & Nine" a huge success!  We had 32 golfers plus 10 more who signed up for dinner. (I promise to work on a better package for the "dinner-only" folks next year!)  Thanks to our Registration Sponsor, one of our newest members, FMG Legal and our Drink Sponsor, Aflac.

We sold all nine Hole Sponsors: AFCO, Cavignac & Associates, CMR Risk & Insurance Services, eLiveLife, Imperial PFS, LGR Insurance Group, MetLife, Sharp Health Plan, and SD Insurance Staffing.  Jennifer Hetzel and the Ways & Means committee secured some great raffle prizes and the sale of "an arm's length of tickets" was well received!

Thanks to all our members and carrier reps who donated additional door prizes for the event. Our charities, OPT and Rachel's House will be most appreciative of our efforts.  Thanks to all who volunteered and contributed to the success of our annual fund-raiser!

Employer of
the Year

It's that time of year where we get to vote on who we would like to nominate for the "Employer of the Year" award. It's a great time to reflect on this past year and to turn in your nominations for who you would like to nominate for this award.

Last year's winner was CMR Risk & Insurance Services, Inc. It's a great way to show your employer that you appreciate their support in you & your career. Please turn in your submissions to Teresa Harrison by April 30th at the latest.
