President's Message

We're at the start of a new year once again and what a great year we plan to have! I want to say thank you to our past president and board for a wonderful year and for creating such great momentum. We also gained quite a few new members this past year.

The new board just met on June 17th to collaborate with the past board. It's great to see some brand new members joining the board. We've come up with a great Calendar for 2011-2012. Stay tuned for what's to come.

We recently had our National Convention in Las Vegas and quite a few of our members went. It was a great time! There were around 500 attendees from around the country. So much happened while we were there. There were great panels & classes to choose from. We had a spectacular speaker, Vernice "Flygirl" Armour. She was strong, inspiring and had a great leadership message.

Our very own Kathleen Kerstenbeck was voted in as Regional Vice President for region VIII. The CWC Speak-Off was amazing. There were very strong contenders. The main topic of this meeting was to decide whether to choose a DBA for the National Association of Insurance Women (NAIW). It was voted upon and the majority chose to add a DBA of International Association of Insurance Professionals (IAIP).

Please join us for our July 18th meeting. It's our annual CWC (Communicating With Confidence) Speak-off. This is always a fun meeting. This educational class is taught by Ruth Hinckfuss. For 10 weeks, her students learn to present different speeches, prepared and unprepared. The meeting on the 18th and is the culmination of all they have learned and where they compete to become the winner. The winner then goes on to represent our association at the California Council Meeting.

And that California Council Meeting will be held HERE! Yes, SDIW is this year's host for our annual Council Meeting. This is very exciting! Our theme is 'The Diamonds Shine Bright on San Diego'. It's September 9 & 10, 2011 and we hope to see many of you there. We have been fundraising and preparing for this for a while now and we hope you can join us.

So, we have some great meetings coming up. And I encourage everyone to come to a meeting. We will keep you posted as to upcoming events on our website and in the newsletter.

And by the way, we will be sending out our newsletter quarterly this year instead of monthly. We will still keep you well informed of all that is going on with SDIW. You will receive monthly flyers regarding all our meetings and special events.

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to our 2011 Board members. To view the new board members, please look to the right.

I Day Report

Thank you to everyone who volunteered and helped to make the SDIW I-Day booth such a great success!  Thanks go out to all those who volunteered at badge night, I-Day registration booth, and to our SDIW booth volunteers.

Because of the many volunteers, we were able to introduce so many people to SDIW, as well as talk to people who had come to our meetings, and even to some past members.  At least a dozen or so people were very interested in joining and took our flyers and applications.

We also promoted our "Insurance Men" calendars and several people took our sample back to their booths and came back to pick up flyers to purchase calendars on-line. We passed out a LOT of flyers on the calendars so we are assuming we will get some sales from that to help raise funds for California Council 2011 which SDIW is hosting in September .

This year we put together an unofficial committee (or team, if you will) and it worked VERY well.  Teresa Harrison and Kay Wheeler led the team with Nancy Mosby & Carol Russell providing much needed assistance and especially creativity in decorating (and manning) the booth.  We made a great team and hope to work together again next year. We all agreed that Black Jack was a wonderful game and gave us a captive audience to talk to and that while we had several good black jack dealers, that Ruth Hinckfuss was the best at dealing and talking up NAIW, SDIW, and IWNSD at the same time.  In fact at our recent I-Day wrap-up meeting, we were thinking that next year we should work in a carnival theme and that Ruth would make an excellent "carnival barker" attracting attention to our booth!!! J  This year the I-Day them was Risky Business, and our booth did a Casino theme where our shout-out was, "Come and win a 100 grand", because we were giving away 100 grand candy bars if you beat the dealer; we gave away mini decks of cards for anyone with a black jack.

It was really a lot of fun and we received really good feed back about I-Day booth.  To say the least, I am very proud of how well we all worked together to make our SDIW booth a great success!!   Oh yeah!  And we filled a table at the luncheon so we will reserve a table again next year.  Keep that in mind in case your company doesn't purchase a table!

Legislative Update - Pam Legge

Pam Legge

Effective July 1st, 2011, California Law requires owners of single family homes that have a fossil-fuel burning appliance, fireplace, or attached garage to install CO Alarms. Violations are punishable by a maximum fine of $200 for each offense. Owners of residential rental property must also comply.  The intent of the law is to reduce the deaths resulting from carbon monoxide poisoning that are currently estimated at 30-40 per year in California.

While the law does not involve property nor liability insurance per se, nor does it address compliance, it may be prudent to check with the carriers you do business with to ask if:

a) they are aware of the new legal requirement b) they have plans to address this requirement in their underwriting process.

Janice McCombs - Thanks to SDIW

I wish to express my thanks and appreciation for all the thoughts and support shown to me by the members of SDIW at the passing of my son, David. The support of friends is a great comfort and provides assistance in the grieving process.

Also, I thank you for the kindness in planting a tree in California in memory of David.

For any who may be interested, we will be having a memorial service for David on his birthday, July 9 at 10:00 AM at University Christian Church, 3900 Cleveland Avenue, San Diego, CA 92103.  The service will be followed by a birthday party reception in David's memory.

Again, that you to all for you comfort and support.

SDIW to Donate Thanksgiving Dinner to a Local Military Family in Need

This year the SDIW will be donating a complete Thanksgiving dinner to a local military family in need. So start thinking about what you'd like to donate. Anytime you're out shopping, pick up a few things for the SDIW donation. We are looking for anything that can be used for Thanksgiving dinner - dry goods, canned foods and anything un-perishable. We will round it out with a fresh turkey or a grocery gift card(s) before we donate the meal to the family.

Since we have nowhere to store the food, please bring your donations to the November 14th meeting. Don't forget! Thanks!
