President's Message

I can not believe that my term as president is coming to an end! Where did the year go? I am very excited about the incoming board and think that they are going to bring new energy and ideas to the table.

NAIW as a whole has gained 941 new members and of that, 11 new members are from our association.....GO TEAM! I think that these are excellent results and believe that all this momentum will only grow in the upcoming year. Please make sure to welcome all of our new members and offer your support and guidance to them.

Our National Convention is just around the corner and I really encourage you to attend. If you are attending and would like to volunteer to help out, please contact Margaret Wildi's assistant, Mary Wildi, at wildimy@grangeinsurance.com.

I look forward to seeing everyone at our installation meeting this month!

See you at our next meeting!

In fellowship,

Membership News - Dani McBride and Kathleen Kerstenbeck

Wow...we're getting close to another SDIW year end.  You should have received your renewal email from National by now.  If you have not, please let Kathleen or me know so that we can investigate with National on your behalf.  Please also renew your membership ASAP.

If for some reason you are choosing to non-renew, PLEASE give us the opportunity to know why.  We want full retention and would love the opportunity to discuss with you ways to improve our association.  For you newer members, you possibly thought, "Wait...I just joined.  This doesn't apply to me."  Well, it does.  Our year starts July 1 and you most likely got the half-year rate when you signed up.  That takes you up to July 1, so please do not overlook your renewal notification.  National no longer mails hard copies out, so if you have misplaced (or deleted) your email renewal notice, please let us know and we will have National send you another one.

Thanks for another great year!  We look forward to 2011-12 being very dynamic with all the new and eager members, and with our association hosting the 2011 California Council meeting.

Legislative Update - Pam Legge

Pam Legge
Assembly Bill (AB) 2782 became effective on January 1, 2011.  This bill requires all individuals and business entities to hold an Accident and Health agent license to transact accident and health insurance.

The California Department of Insurance received numerous inquiries from several sources wanting to know who would need the Accident and Health agent license, as well as concerns that there wasn't enough time prior to January 1, 2011 to obtain the license.

As a result, the previous Commissioner, Steve Poisner, granted a six-month extension to Fire and Casualty broker-agents who were licensed prior to December 31, 2010, to meet the requirement.   Specifically, Fire and Casualty broker-agents licensed prior to December 31, 2010 have until June 30, 2011 to obtain the Accident & Health license to continue to transact accident and health insurance.  The extension applies to both individual and business entities, as well as both California residents and non-residents.

However, individuals and business entities who were not licensed as of January 1, 2011 as either an Accident & Health agent or a Fire & Casualty broker-agent must obtain the Accident & Health license to be able to transact accident and health insurance.   When applying for an Accident & Health agent license, individual California residents currently licensed as Fire & Casualty broker-agents will need to complete 20-hours of pre-licensing education covering accident and health insurance as well as pass a qualifying examination.

CA Council Planning Update

The CA Council Meeting Planning is coming along well.  We are doing very well with fund raising and our plans are starting to take shape.

We still have a lot of calendars! If you haven't purchased one yet, they are $20 ($22 if you use PayPal) and they start in July and go through December of 2012.

Our Wine & Nine golf tournament was a lot of fun.  We are looking at potentially hosting another one in September so stay tuned. We should have the book marks ready for mailing within a week or so.  We will be sending book marks out to all members in California asking for a donation.

For every $25 someone sends in, they will receive an entry into a drawing for a free registration to the meeting.   We also have numerous sponsorship opportunities for the CA Council Meeting.  If you know anyone who would like to sponsor any part of the event, please send me an email to harleycage@cox.net.

We also have vendor tables available for Friday 9/9.  I would be happy to send out information on those as well.  Our next planning meeting is on Saturday May 7 at Marie Callender's.  The information is on our web site under the 2011 CA Council tab.

If you would like to volunteer to help, please let me know.  We would also like to thank our committee for the hard work put in so far.  We're making real progress and we're only going to pick up steam as the event draws closer.

Thanks again!
