President's Message
|
I missed seeing everyone this month but I look forward to
catching up with you all at this month's meeting.
The speaker for the September meeting will be Patricia
Wenskunas from Crime Survivors. Crime Survivors is a non-profit organization
that has many resources available to victims of crimes such as help
with court procedures, support, and much more. If you are planning on attending, we are
asking for everyone to bring something to donate to the emergency bags such as
$5 phone cards, hand sanitizers, stress balls and mini first-aid kits. We will
also be inducting our new members, so make sure that you are there!
CA Council will also be held this month in Torrance, California.
I am excited to hear that so many of our members will be attending. With
Kathleen as this years CA Council Director, I know it will be a meeting you
won't want to miss.
Our National President, Margaret Wildi has sent goals for
all the chapters and they are as follows:
1.) Every
Member, Get a Member - She would like each member to recruit one new member
during the 2010-2011 year.
2.) Collect
at least $100 in donations for the Legacy foundation.
3.) Present
two NAIW courses with at least 10 participants.
I really think that our chapter can meet these goals.
So....start thinking about coworkers and other people you know in the industry who would benefit from being a member of SDIW and invite them to come to one
of our monthly meetings.

Jennifer Hetzel

California Senate Passes Chelsea's Law!
The California State Senate just voted unanimously to support Chelsea's Law. Now we are one step away from sending Governor Schwarzenegger a true one strike, life without parole, sentence for violent sex offenders who target children. Later this week, the strengthened version of Chelsea's Law that passed the Senate will go before the Assembly for one final concurrence vote.
In the Senate, we expanded the scope of Chelsea's Law so it now includes:
- A true life penalty without the possibility of parole for the most dangerous sexual offenders
- Increased sentences for forcible sex crimes
- Increased parole terms (in some cases lifetime parole) for those who target children under the age of 14
- Restrictions on sex offenders' ability to enter parks where children congregate
- A first-in-the-nation containment model and dynamic risk assessment structure including polygraph testing for sex offenders on parole
- A requirement that Megan's Law publicly list sex offenders' risk assessment scores
- A revision of the California mentally disordered offender laws to provide for continued detention of offenders where evaluation and assessment deem such to be necessary
Thank you for being with us every step of the way and for your continued commitment to protecting our children. Your calls, letters, volunteer hours and petitions have made all the difference.
I've never been prouder of a team than this one that came together to pass one of the most comprehensive public safety measures in California's history.
We'll keep you posted on our progress.
From State Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher

Membership News - Kathleen Kerstenbeck & Dani McBride
|

We hope everyone is having a wonderful
summer, even though it's been a little chillier than we're used to! We have a lot going on with Membership, and
want to let you know all about it!
We'll be holding new member
installations at our September dinner meeting. We look forward to a big turnout to welcome our new members!
We have placed our name badge
order. Hopefully everyone who wanted one,
got on board. If not, we'll place
another order in a few months as we get new members. If you ordered a new badge, I will let you
know whether or not it comes in prior to our next meeting and how much you
owe. Thanks for making this badge order
a success.
There is a challenge that was issued
at the National Level. It's called "You +
One". This means that we need each member
to try to bring a new member in this year.
This is something we should be thinking about all year long, but it
is especially useful early in the fiscal year.
Besides, don't you want to share the wonderful experiences that NAIW has
to offer? Sharing your Association of
Choice with your colleagues is a great way to bond, in addition to the added
networking opportunities. Our current
membership count is 33! This is a strong
number, but imagine what we could do if we doubled our membership! We would have an even stronger base, we would
have new and fresh ideas coming in, plus we would have more people to serve on
committees. Please do what you can this
year to make it "You + One". The friend
you recruit will thank you!

Education Update - Ruth Hinckfuss | GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR NAIW MEMBERS!
You will find a link below to a flyer that I think you will find very interesting. This flyer
contains information on a pilot program offered through the National Alliance
to active NAIW members
who have completed their CISR designation. This is an
experimental program, being offered only in California at this time. If a dues
paid NAIW member takes a new participant to a core CISR class and they both
complete the class - the
CISR will then receive a full scholarship for their next update.
Currently in California the CISR classes are running at $167, so this is a big
savings. PLEASE SHARE
THIS WITH YOUR EMPLOYERS
AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. Feel free to
send me an e-mail if you have any questions... ruthw74@hotmail.com In

Council 2011 Planning Committee
We had our first big planning meeting
on Tuesday 8/17. And it's not too late to
join a committee. If you like to plan
events, this is right up your alley.
Please contact either Dani or Kathleen to let us know how you you'd like to help. Please keep in mind that if you're contacted by someone, they really do need your help and
they thought of your specific talent as someone that could lend a hand. It would be great if we can all come together
as a group and really knock this thing out of the park. We have a strong start. Our dates and venue are set. The big thing at this point is fund raising,
and we're starting to make headway on all the details. We have loads of great ideas for fundraising,
but can always use help on more ideas and the execution of the events.
