New President's Message - Jennifer Hetzel |
If you missed the June meeting this month then you really missed out. We had our annual CWC Speak Off and ALL of the contestants did an excellent job. Their were four competitors this year Christine Jones, Kimbra Pederson, Pam Reiter, and Sandy Smith . The winner this year was Kimbra Pederson from AFCO and the runner up was Pam Reiter from Service Master.
At the June meeting we also agreed to change two meeting dates. Make sure you mark your calendars. They are as follows: the December meeting will be held on the 13th and the February meeting will be the 28th.
The next twelve months are going to be fun and rewarding. We have planned something for everyone. There are a lot of fresh faces on the board this term and along with more seasoned members, we came up with a great calendar for this upcoming year. Be sure to take a look!
Kathleen Kerstenbeck, Regina Lemanowicz, and I attended the NAIW International convention in Washington, DC and what an experience that was. If you have never attended one, I would highly recommend you do. The convention was not only a great learning experience but it was a lot of fun too.
Our next meeting will be our summer Bunco meeting held in the AFCO building Conference Center. Bunco is one of our fundraisers so make sure you invite all your friends an coworkers to come!

| Legislative Update - Pam Legge |
On Tuesday, June 8th, Californians cast their votes in the Primary Election. The former chief of eBay, Meg Whitman won the Republican nomination for Governor over Steve Poisner, 64.2% to26.9%. It was reported that Meg Whitman spent $71 million of her own savings to fund the campaign.
Carlay Fiorina also spent millions of her own money and will be running against the democratic incumbent, Barbara Boxer, for the senate seat in November.
The passage of Proposition 14, also known as the Open Primary Measure, will allow voters to cast their ballots for any candidate, changing the current way voting is actually conducted in the state. Voters will now be given the same ballot in primary elections for most of the state, and federal races, with the exception of the presidential contest. The two candidates with the most votes would advance to the general election, regardless of party affiliation. GovernorSchwarzenegger donated $2 million from his personal account, while the California Chamber of Commerce gave $720,000 to support the passage of this bill.
Proposition 13 also passed which allowed for property taxes and seismic retrofit for buildings.
Propositions 16 and 17 failed. Under Prop 16, voter approval would be required before a municipality could get into the electricity business. This proposal was spearheaded by the large private energy company Pacific Gas & Electric. It was reported that the San Francisco based utility company spent more than $46 million of its shareholders' money in "a vigorous ad campaign" calling it the Taxpayer's Right to Vote Act.
Proposition 17 was seeking to provide insurance companies with greater flexibility in setting rates. This measure would have allowed automobile insurance companies to base their prices in part on a driver's history of coverage, authorizing discounts for those who have kept their coverage in force, even if they changed carriers. Mercury Insurance financed this bill with $16 million from their fund.

Membership News - Kathleen Kerstenbeck |
Here we are at the start of another new year for SDIW! Your Membership Co-Chairs are eager to get a start! SDIW is a great place to network, grow and develop. Please consider bringing a friend or a coworker to a meeting to introduce them to all that SDIW has to offer! We are also working on 100% retention, so please send your renewals in to NAIW-you should have received an e-mail in their efforts to reduce paper mailings. If you did not receive an e-mail from NAIW, please shoot an e-mail to us at membership@naiw.org.
We have a fabulous year ahead of us, and Jen has us on track to continue the great momentum that KK started. This is a very exciting time for our association and it is great to share that time with your friends. In case you weren't aware, NAIW has relaxed their membership criteria to include people in related industries, not just insurance. Think about your friends at restoration companies. Think about your friends at glass repair companies or collision repair centers. Think about your friends who left your agency or that you left at a prior agency. We will be offering Continuing Education classes, Leadership Development and lots of networking opportunities. Being a member of NAIW means you have over 8,000 members to network with nationwide! We have a fabulous new board with "fresh blood" and great new ideas to propel us into the future. Let's continue the trend by bringing in even more new members to share in our success and really launch an exciting era for the Association!

Kathleen Kerstenbeck

| Education - Ruth Hinckfuss |
This month we held our CWC Speak-Off and had a wonderful time.
Our four speakers were really excellent. The speeches all four ladies delivered where interesting and very well written. Additionally, the dreaded impromptus where executed great; nobody blanked and the topic was fun.
Our competitors where:
· Christine Jones
· Kimbra Pederson
· Pam Reiter
· Sandy Smith
Two of our fellow classmates were unable to attend the competition due to personal emergencies. We missed them, but of course understand that emergencies do happen and we wish them the best outcome in their situations.
We had many people assist us in making this event a success. From our wonderful den-mother, our runner and door-keeper, two time-keepers, three scorers, and many others ladies that volunteered to help.
I do wish to do a special mention and big thank you to our great judges: Jack Gibbard, Anna-Marie Reilly and Ricardo Moran. Without their commitment to the art of public speaking it would have been much harder to choose our winner.
But choose a winner we did... and... drum-roll please... Kimbra Pederson took it and will be able to represent our Association in future Speak-Off competitions at Council and beyond. Our runner-up was Pam Ritter and I'm pretty sure that IWNSD will be asking her to represent them at an upcoming Speak-Off. Well done ladies!
We are very proud of all of our class participants and competitors, your commitment to the class and the process was fabulous and everyone enjoyed your efforts and enthusiasm.
KEEP YOUR EYES AND EARS OPEN FOR ANOTHER "CONFIDENCE WHILE COMMUNICATING" CLASS COMING UP AROUND MARCH OF NEXT YEAR!!!
