Read Across America Goes to School of Hope
| In celebration of the National Education Association's Read Across America Day, 16 high school students from the Bassick High School GEARUP/BuildOn program read to students at Geraldine Johnson School, one of United Way of Coastal Fairfield County's Schools of Hope. The event took place on March 2, which also happens to be the birthday of famed children's book author Dr. Seuss. As a tribute, students at each grade level were read a different Dr. Seuss book, and all children at each read-aloud were presented with a brand new copy of the book that was read to the class, as well as an additional gently used book for their home collections. City of Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch and Geraldine W. Johnson, for whom the school is named, also read to students.

VOLUNTEER.
| One woman's story!
Lois Keen loves being a mentor. For the past few months she has mentored 10-year-old Azalen, and is enjoying every moment the two of them share. Through her work over the years Lois has seen the important role a mentor can play in the life of a child. There was a period of her life, however, when Lois felt she didn't have time to be a mentor. This changed when she saw an article in a Norwalk paper which featured Norwalk Mayor Richard Moccia, who was encouraging people to become mentors. "I said to myself, you need to make time. This is something you must do," Lois says. She says mentoring is about the journey. This is hers. Read more
