New year, new rules
LP broadcasters get a Christmas gift
Presidential SealGenerally, the two-week break at the end of the year signals a lull for broadcasters, but this year plenty happened for US broadcasters between the advent of the Holidays and the advent of 2011. Arguably, the biggest happening was the passage of the Community Low Power Radio Act, which was signed into law by President Obama on December 20th. Essentially, the legislation clears the way for the creation of hundreds and possibly thousands of low-power radio stations across the US. You can read the full text of the law here, then examine The Prometheus Radio Project's plain-speech analysis here.
Axia takes the spotlight in Hong Kong
Hong Kong skyline Hong Kong is one of the world's most populous cities, with over 7 million people packed into just a shade over 400 square miles, making it a very lucrative radio market. Recently, Metro Radio installed studios powered by Axia AoIP networks and consoles. "'Axia is excellent IP audio technology," according to Tim Chan, Metro's Senior Engineering manager, who was interviewed about his Axia installation by Pro Audio Asia. "There's nothing similar on the market." Read the whole story here.

Hx2 hybrid upgrade for WHOV-FM
WHOV logo They were the first over-the-air educational station licensed to a Black college or university in 1964. They were the Million Music Conference's Station of the Year in 1998, and Gavin's Station of the Year in 1999. And recently, Hampton University's WHOV became one of the first stations to order and install Telos' new Hx2 POTS hybrid. Stations have been specifying a lot of Hx1 (single hybrid) and Hx2 (dual hybrid) units since their introduction last Summer, and with good reason: Hx hybrids are Telos' newest generation of POTS hybrids, with all sorts of new audio tools that make call-in segments shine. Telos invented the digital broadcast phone hybrid back in 1985, and Hx packs 25 years of experience into making your calls sound great. Read WHOV's story here, then get the skinny on the advanced tech inside Hx1 and Hx2 from the Telos website.
Net Neutrality
What's the real scoop?
FCC logoAnother bit of rulemaking initiated over the Holiday break is the FCC's ruling on "Network Neutrality." Proponents say it's needed to keep ISPs from improperly limiting access to certain types of Internet data; detractors say it's just a first step in Government's plan to regulate the wild 'n wooly Web.

Although the two sides couldn't disagree more on the meaning (and even the necessity) of the ruling, technologists are scrambling to make sense of its provisions. SyFy's DVICE techsite has put together a 5-minute overview of what they call "the good, the bad and the really, really ugly" contained in the Fed's newest rule.
Tech Tip of the Month
Password Reset for Omnia ONE
Push for helpRecently, folks who've forgotten the passwords to their Omnia ONE processors have been asking how to unlock their units and reset that pass to the factory default. Here's the procedure, but note that the Omnia ONE must be running software version 1.1 (25) or later for this procedure to work. (You can find out what version you're running in the Administrative menu / About screen.)

1) Rremove power from the unit.
2) Remove the top cover and locate jumper JP5..
3) Move the jumper from pins 1-2 (toward the rear of the unit) to pins 2-3 (toward the front ).
4) Power up the unit. Wait until it boots all the way up and the main menu is displayed.
5) Verify that the password has been reset to the factory default. ("omnia")
6) Unplug (remove power from) the unit.
7) Move jumper JP5 back to pins 1-2 (toward the rear of the unit).
8) Re-install the top cover of the unit.

EAS Forum online
ConElRad logoWith the FCC's recent EAS-CAP ruling and (now extended) timeline for implementation, broadcasters are scrambling for information, and there are lots of questions and conjecture flying around. To help get everyone on the same page, the EAS Forum and e-mailing list has been set up under the auspices of the Broadcast Warning Working Group, and is hosted on Radiolists.net. The site, located at eas.radiolists.net, is a clearinghouse for rules, standards, equipment reviews, and more. Check it out and stay up to date - September 30th will be here before you can blink.

Until next time - Cheers!
