Reservoir Work to Close Waterton Canyon
Denver Water to remove tons of Hayman Fire sediment.

Denver Water will close access to Waterton Canyon for two substantial periods of time in 2010 and 2011. The first closure will begin on Monday, August 2nd, 2010 and end Sunday, December 3rd, 2010. The second closure will begin on Monday, February 28th, 2011 and will last the remainder of 2011 with access resuming January 1st, 2012.  Neither the parking lot at the mouth of the canyon nor any part of the canyon itself will be accessible during the closures.

Strontia Springs Reservoir currently contains more than one million cubic yards of sediment - a result of multiple large fires and intense rainfall events in the drainage over the past several years. A Denver Water Contractor will dredge the reservoir to remove at least 625,000 cubic yards of the sediment.

Waterton Canyon is an extremely popular recreation area for thousands of fishermen, hikers, bicyclists and families in Denver's southwest suburbs and has traditionally represented the beginning of the Colorado Trail on the eastern side of the Continental Divide. The canyon has been an important fishery for the metro angler for decades.  We recognize the need to get the work done on Strontia and believe we will all be better served when the work is completed.  Still, living through the absence of such an awesome close fishery is going to be painful for a lot of fishermen.  Do yourself a favor and make sure to get out and pay the canyon a visit at some point this summer before the closure.

For more information regarding Waterton Canyon and the closures, please visit Denver Water online.

Trophy Rainbows at Alaska's Rainbow Point Lodge
Copper & Gibraltar Rivers, Moraine Creek & Others

We recently had the distinct pleasure of visiting one of the premiere trout fishing destinations in all of Alaska - Alaska's Rainbow Point Lodge. Rainbow Point services the very best in wild Rainbow Trout rivers in the Lake Iliamna & Katmai National Park region. Daily float-plane fly-outs take you to the pristine waters of the Copper, Moraine, American & Kamishak Rivers as well as several other secret streams and lakes. Jet boats can whisk you away to the lower Copper at a moments notice, and Rainbow Point is one of only two lodges in Alaska that can tow a jet boat to the mouth of the Gibraltar river in their lake-worthy cabin cruiser.

Not only are the fish big and ballistic, but they like to eat dry flies with near reckless abandon this time of year! If catching 20+ inch fish on big dry flies and 2X tippet sounds like fun, you might want to consider booking a week with Rainbow Point at the end of June next year.

Once the Sockeye Salmon move into the rivers by the millions, it becomes pretty difficult to fish to the trout. By the end of August however, the salmon are pretty much done spawning and the Rainbows begin to feast on eggs and salmon flesh. This is the prime time of year when the fish are at their heaviest weight and have the feed-bag on full time. Late August through the end of September and even into October represent your best chance to catch 30+ inch rainbows when they are at their heaviest - and limited spots at the lodge are still available!

As if the fishing wasn't reason enough to visit Rainbow Point Lodge, the scenery, wildlife viewing and outstanding food and service conspire to make this adventure worth every penny. Lake Iliamna and nearby Katmai National Park offer more eye-popping beauty and photo opportunities than you would ever be able to capture in a week. Osprey, Bald Eagles, Minks, Otters and of course Grizzly Bears make regular appearances during your exploration.

One of the best parts of it all though, is heading back to the lodge after a long day for hot appetizers, drinks on the deck and swapping of fishing stories, followed by an expertly prepared dinner from the lodge's full-time chef.

We are currently working on a Rainbow Point Lodge Video for the Travel section of the website, and we will be posting scores of additional information regarding rates, prime times, travel arrangements, necessary gear and all of the other details that make booking angling travel with Anglers All a breeze. Please call us at the shop if you have immediate questions regarding Rainbow Point Lodge or any other angling destinations.

Versitip - The Ultimate Line for Cold Water Destinations

On the heels of Josh and Chris' trip to Alaska, we need to dedicate a little time toward some Alaska gear.  For a long time now, we've been huge fans of the Versitip Line system from Rio Products.  As an Alaska, British Columbia or any other cold water destination line, the Versitip system gives you the utmost in flexibility.  Think of it as the ultimate Boy Scout line for unknown waters.  With it, you'll be prepared!

There are lots of positive comments we receive from our customers who have used this system.  The most compelling though is the feedback we get from their guides.  When you show up with one of these systems in your gearbag, you'll be ready for anything.   The lines are designed to give you a tool to tackle just about any fishing situation, whether it be stripping a monstrous mouse pattern to stupid-huge leopard rainbows or going deep with streamers under some foreboding log jam.

Each line comes with a floating body section and a set of tapered interchangeable sinking tips in a convenient wallet to store them in.  The tips are looped directly onto the body of the line using RIO's non-hinging welded loops.  Each tip is density compensated and comes in a variety of different sink rates.  The lines aren't looped at the terminal end, but we provide custom loops for you as part of our professional rigging service.
Hot Summer Dry Flies
Green Drakes, Hoppers & PMDs

The month of July in Colorado promises the best dry fly fishing the year will have to offer with good hatches of Green Drakes, Pale Morning Duns and lots of Hopper activity.

If you've been itching to put away the split-shot and indicators, now's the time! So grab the floatant, and brush up on your reach cast! Below are a handful of patterns that we have had great success with this time of year.

Quigley's Film Critic Green Drake    Furimsky's Foam Green Drake

BC Dropper Hopper                       Morrish's Hopper

Barr's Vis-A-Dun PMD                  BH Barr's Emerger - PMD

Green Drake patterns of all types should generally be fished in sizes 10 and 12. Hoppers are effective in sizes 6 through 14 depending on type and time of year (bigger flies for later summer as they grow), and Pale Morning Duns are generally fished in sizes 14 through 18.

Fall Steelhead on the Bulkley River
Steelhead Excursions, Oct. 21st - 28th 2010

Join us and the folks at Steelhead Excursions for a week of fall steelhead fishing on the world-famous Bulkley River. The end of October generally produces the largest fish of the season on the Bulkley - some over 40"!

This trip normally sells for $4,700 for the week (7 nights/6 angling days), but if you book through Anglers All Travel, you will save $500 off the normal rate! We were able to secure a special rate of $4,200 for the week of October 21st through 28th, so make sure to contact us directly if you are interested.  If you know anything about Bulkley steelheading, Bob Hull, owner of Steelhead Excursions is the man.  There are very few guides that have the ability to get down into Driftwood canyon, a very exclusive section of the Bulkley offering secluded fishing in a remarkably beautiful area.  This is a non-netting year.  That being the case this stands to be the perfect storm in terms of having favorable conditions for steelhead.

The guest house offers bed & breakfast-style accommodations. There are six bedrooms with double or queen-sized beds, three full bathrooms, a lounging area and a fly tying bench. All meals are included in the package - alcohol is not included (byo).

A typical days events are as follows:
  • Early morning breakfast
  • Trailer the jet boats to a boat launch (5-35 minutes)
  • Fish until about noon, have a hot shore-lunch
  • Fish until late afternoon, returning by 6:00 pm
  • Showers and cocktails
  • Sit down to a delicious home-style meal around 7:00 pm
  • Relax & Sleep
  • Start over again
