Education Credential Single and Multiple Subject
The Irvine Campus is very excited to announce that the Single Subject Credential and Multiple Subject Credential programs will start in Fall Session I 2008! Chapman, Irvine, submitted a proposal to the university requesting the two credential programs and it was accepted in March 2008. The campus will soon begin interviewing for a Faculty Member in Education as well as an Education Program Manager. Coursework for the two programs will be offered every session with a variety of core classes and prerequisites regularly available. Tuition cost will be similar to that of graduate level coursework and financial aid will be available.
If you are thinking of becoming a teacher at the elementary school, junior high school or high school level, a credential is required for California public schools. If you would like more information pertaining to the course requirements, feel free to stop by our front office or visit the 2007-2008 University College online catalog.
Please also put your contact information down at the front office desk so that the Irvine Campus can follow up with you and make sure all your questions are answered. Thanks!

| Denise Greenstein
Dear Denise:
With the state of the economy and fluctuations in the job market how can I best recession-proof my career?
Dear Nervous:
I am glad you have posed this question, since so many professionals become complacent or scared in their positions when things get uncertain. There are many strategies you could explore and implement. First, really look at your field. Is it changing, evolving or disappearing? Is it time to shift laterally, up or out? Be willing to take on projects that get you visibility. Second, review your accomplishments over the last few years and evaluate your progress. Use these to update your resume right now. Third, develop a plan - what you want to do and where you want to do it. Get advice from your networking contacts and create a target company list. Approach hiring managers with what you can do for them and don't rely on only job postings. The best positions are the ones you create for yourself by fulfilling a company need. Lastly, if any of these tips sound daunting - Why not use our Career Check Up service that includes a 90 minute session with an expert Career Counselor. It is free for students and alum. Go to www.chapman.edu/irvine and click on career center. Complete the online intake form and select your counselor - it is that easy.

What Can We Do?
In recent years, many companies and local schools have decided to provide an eco-freindly mode of communication. To keep with the trends, We came up with an eco-friendly newsletter. This will be our new mode of communication for our newsletters to students, faculty and alumni.
There are many ways you can help at home and become a little more eco-friendly. Here are some great tips for you to start using in your day to day lives:
1. Laundry: Laundry is a neverending battle. The washer and dryer uses an enormous amount of water and power everyday you use it.
Solutions:
a. Cut back on laundry by spot cleaning or hand-washing/line dry.
b. If you must dry clean, seek out eco-friendly dry cleaners available in your neighborhood.
Helpful Hints: Instead of harsh detergents many use baby shampoo for handwashing jeans and blouses.
c. Wash with cold water, cleans just as good and uses less energy.
2. Unplug It: Unplug any electronic devices that are not in use in your home. Some examples aer cell phones, digital cameras, iPods, and laptops. Apparently, a larger percentage of energy is wasted when cords are left plugged into the walls. Another idea is to hook all your chargers to a surge protector and just turn it off all at once.
3. Keep the Car Home: Consider using alternative transportation and walk, ride a bike, take a bus or train, or carpool.
4. Reduce, Reuse, And Recycle: Use cloth bags or boxes for lunches. Use washable cloth towels and napkins. Use an erasable note board for notes. Send electronic holiday greetings. Take advantage of libraries. RECYCLE, RECYCLE, RECYCLE. Find your local recycling centers and see what they can recycle for you. You'd be surprised.
Let's make an impact on not just Earth Day but instead everyday to help make this environment cleaner for future generations.

24 Hour Dance-A-Thon Fighting Cancer
This year I participated in the 24 Hour Swing Dance-A-Thon. The fundraiser was to create awarness of the ongoing cancer effort in Orange County. All proceeds went to the City of Hope Foundation. Chapman University College, Irvine Campus sponsored $500.00 to the event. I completed the whole 24 hours which was my goal and am glad I could accomplished it. It was nice to see how many people in just Irvine really supported the issue. We also had some familiar Irvine Campus faces who came to show their support. This event was a complete success and ended up raising over $185,000 in just 24 hours. If you would like to see pictures from the event, please visit the Community Outreach Board on campus. You can also see if there are any local events that might interest you as well.
Thank's to Jill Parma who made the sponsorship possible and to Julie Barrientes, Sal Barrientes, Carmen Quinonez, Charles Eldridge for coming to the event and supporting this great effort!
Making a difference, one step at a time.

OCTFCU Worthy Student Award Scholarship Winner
As a graduate student in the Organizational Leadership program Michelle Wulfestieg exemplifies the term "worthy student". Michelle is the Executive Director of the Spencer Hospice Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for terminally ill patients and their families. "The education I've received at Chapman has played a crucial role in helping me to realize my dream of running my own non-profit organization, a dream that has allowed me to give back something to others who are facing difficulties and hardship."
While working full-time for Spencer Hospice Michelle has been attending Chapman continuously since January 2006. Often attending full-time, Michelle has maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA and earned the respect of her teachers, fellow students and the staff here at Chapman. The students who applied for this scholarship were all well qualified and represented several programs, but the committee was able to select Michelle as a candidate who stood out amongst the applicants. Michelle received a $ 500 award, sponsored by the Orange County Teacher's Federal Credit Union. |

Graduation Gift Ideas Eco-Friendly Gifts
Time to get a great gift for a recently graduating friend or family member. In sticking with our enviornmentally safe theme, there are several ways that you can give gifts that will also promote the "greener" side of life.
1. Travel and Transportation: Traveling is something that many graduates do when celebrating their biggest accomplishment. So why not buy them a trip. There actually are travel agencies that offer eco-friendly, low-impact tours for cultural, adventure or educational escapes. Also, if you book a trip on Expedia, you have the option to buy credits to offset your carbon emissions. There are also some travel bags and accessories that are sturdy and made from recycled materials for all types of travel.
2. Work Related: A good bag is always a classic gift and many are now made of recycled and sustainable materials. You can also find solar-powered messengar bags that will recharge batteries for laptops and other devices.
3. For the Office: Giving stationary or notecards? Consider searching for recycled paper products. Its cost efficent and helpful to the environment.
So remember to think green this summer when buying your loved ones a gift.
