"A Tribute to Las Américas: Uniting Cultures Across Borders"
Annual Banquet and Auction at the
Seattle Design Center

¡Saludos!

What do a trip to Tunisia, a traditional Mexican birthday party for your child, and a hands-on tamale-making lesson have in common?  Not much, except that you can buy them all at El Centro de la Raza's first annual auction on September 27.  Check out our other hot items and buy your tickets before they're gone!

We're so grateful to all of you who choose to support us with volunteer hours, donations, and your kind words.  At our auction this fall, we will celebrate "A Tribute to las Américas: Uniting Cultures Across Borders" while raising money for funds to support our programs and services.

Just this month, while contacting El Centro neighbor Culinary Communion about a donation of cooking classes--another hot item to bid on!--we saw proof of the mutual support that happens every day in our community.  Gloria, a participant in El Centro's programs, now works at Culinary Communion, a local cooking school offering hands-on classes.

"Gloria is loved and appreciated, and one of our most outstanding employees," says Justin Gaumond, Director of Operations at Culinary Communion.  When Gloria was looking for work, a case manager in the Homeless Assistance program gave Gloria the recommendation that landed her the job.

"We want our children to have access to education and good careers," says José, Gloria's husband.  Working at Culinary Communion allows his wife to earn money to support their children's futures.

Gloria y JosePlease consider a donation to El Centro de la Raza in support of participants like Gloria y José, or contact us to get involved as a volunteer.

Keep reading below to see all of the other programs and events taking place later this month at El Centro de la Raza!

Submit photos to honor your deceased loved ones at our Día de los Muertos exhibit.  Our Día de los Muertos slideshow is a wonderful way to remember the life and labor of those who have gone before us.  You may submit photos of your friends and family who have passed, or photos representing social justice issues.

All photos will be included in our three-week Día de los Muertos exhibit this fall.  Please e-mail your photos to assistant@elcentrodelaraza.org or come by the Development Office (Room 304) with an original copy to be scanned.

Job Opening - Free Tax Campaign Tax Site Manager

Low-income working people can keep more of what they earn and save it for their futures with anti-poverty benefits like the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC).  Once again, El Centro de la Raza will partner with United Way of King County to provide free tax preparation services to our community, and enroll eligible candidates for the EITC.

We're seeking an organized, dedicated individual to work 12-18 hours per week during tax season (January - April 2009).  A monthly stipend is available.  Please visit our website for more details.

Ramping Up our Homeownership Center

With nation-wide changes to the economy, we are now, after many years, once again in a Buyer's Market.  First-time home buyers won't have to compete with speculators when offering a reasonable price for a prospective home.  To reach out to our communities and encourage first-time home buyers, El Centro de la Raza's Homeownership Center is offering a new series of seminars (see below for more details).

Staff in the Homeownership Center are also receiving special training to initiate post-purchase homeownership education sessions.  Many long-time homeowners are facing foreclosure or are in default or impending delinquency for lack of information about how and when to refinance.  Join us!

Post-Purchase Orientation - Saturday, July 19 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Post-Purchase Orientation - Saturday, August 2 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

First-Time Homebuyer's Seminar - Saturday, August 9 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Post-Purchase Orientation - Saturday, September 6 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

First-Time Homebuyer's Seminar - Saturday, September 13 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
