dedham square logoWelcome Back Scoop Fans!  Looks like Saturday is going to be a wash.  No reason to fret! Put on those galoshes, grab that umbrella and head down to the Square.  Catch one of the new flicks at the Dedham Community Theatre, get a bite to eat or lounge around with a cup o' joe at one of the coffee shops and read your favorite book.   While you're at it, check out some of the new inventory in all the unique boutiques and shops.

Keep It Local Please help support the independently owned small businesses in town.   Did you know that  60 cents of every dollar spent in an independently owned business, like the majority of those in the Square, is retained or recirculated in the same community?  Just one-third of that, 20 cents of every dollar, remains in a community when it is spent at a chain store.   Another great reason to "Keep it Local".
News Circling the Square
Saturday Night FevahDisco Inferno!  Put on your dancing shoes and boogie on down to Dedham Square Circle's Annual Fall Benefit "Saturday Night Fever" on Sat. 11/14 from 7-11 p.m. Spend the night cutting the rug on (brace yourselves) a life size replica of the original light up disco dance floor from the movie "Saturday Night Fever"!  And, of course, there will even be a spinning silver disco ball.

As if that wasn't enough, a celebrity DJ will spin some funky tunes.   Want a hint? He also happens to be our honorable State Rep. and he was a DJ long before he took the oath of office!   Rep. Paul McMurtry will don the infamous white suit he debuted at last year's "Dancing with the Dedham Stars" and even reenact his routine with his professional dance partner.  You don't want to miss this!  The event will take place in the beautiful space at 619 High Street, the building formerly known as the Christian Science Church, next to the post office and across from "nest".    Tickets are limited so get yours early.   $75 and up per person and includes beer & wine, hors d'oeuvres, tapas, desserts, live auction and raffle and a whole lot of fun. For more info. click here.
  Hope to see you there!

whole foods storeSuper Coups!
During the month of October, shoppers at the new Whole Foods Market in Dedham will have the opportunity to help support the efforts of the Dedham Square Circle  to revitalize Dedham Square.  At the checkout register, customers can select a register coupon, in the amount of either $1 or $3, which will be added to their total grocery purchase.   At the end of the October, Whole Foods will contribute the funds collected through these coupons to DSC.  An easy way to give! Help spread the word!

market scene 2Only 1 Week Left!  It's hard to believe the Dedham Farmers Market's season is almost over.  You have one last chance to trek to the Square on Wednesday afternoon to see what all the buzz is about.  The market, an initiative of the Dedham Square Circle,  is held in the town's  permit lot across from Citizens Bank on Eastern Avenue.   Featuring fresh locally grown produce from Massachusetts' farms, specialty food suppliers and more, the market runs from 12-6 every Wednesday, rain or shine, through October 28.  To learn more about our vendors and find some great recipes click here.

maria stephanosCelebrity Sighting!  Fox 25's Maria Stephanos was recently spotted at the Square's world famous Greek restaurant "Kouzina Estiatorio" ordering up Keftedes, Tzatziki and lemon potatoes, and has been back for more!  After her last stop in to order take-out with her husband and kids, she called Kouzina to tell them just how amazing the food was.   Owner Xeno Sontoulidis tells us he delivers lunch orders to Maria and co-anchor Mark Ockerbloom at the Fox 25 studio often.  Talk about a celebrity endorsement!

SPNSA Square-centric Month for St. Paul's Preschoolers
Recently, St. Paul's students took a jaunt to the Dedham Square Fire Station on their annual field trip.  The children learned about safety, practiced their skills using the firehouse, took turns sliding down a portion of the fire pole and even tried on firefighter Kevin Davis' heavy fire coat.   how fun is that?!

Dedham's Environmental Coordinator, Virginia LeClair
, recently visited the school to teach the children the difference between the color green and being "green".  Virginia explained the "3 R's" , "reduce, reuse, and recycle", and why it's so important to protect the earth by recycling at home and at school.  Last week, local children's book author and illustrator, Peter H. Reynolds, visited the school and read from several of his books and illustrated his magic on an easel.  He was a big hit!

Dedham Square Happenings
It's Show Time!   Opening tonight at  The  Dedham Community Theatre are two new films everyone's talking about.

a serious manA SERIOUS MAN:  Larry Gopnik (Michael Stuhlbarg) is a physics professor at a 1960s university, and his life is coming apart at the seams. His wife (Sari Lennick) is leaving him, his jobless brother (Richard Kind) has moved in, and someone is trying to sabotage his chances for tenure. Larry seeks advice from three different rabbis, but whether anyone can help him overcome his many afflictions remains to be seen. A film by Joel and Ethan Coen that has critics everywhere claiming it's the must-see movie of the fall.

motherhood movieMOTHERHOOD: From writer/director Katherine Dieckmann, the acclaimed filmmaker of "Diggers" and "A Good Baby," comes "Motherhood," starring Uma Thurman, Anthony Edwards and Minnie Driver. Eliza Welch (Thurman) is a former fiction writer-turned-mom-blogger with her own site, "The Bjorn Identity." Putting her deeper creative ambitions on hold to raise her two children, Eliza lives and works in two rent-stabilized apartments in a walk-up tenement building smack in the middle of an otherwise upscale Greenwich Village.  Eliza's good-natured but absent-minded husband (Edwards) seems tuned out to his wife's conflicts, not to mention basic domestic reality, while her best friend Sheila (Minnie Driver) understands this - and Eliza -- all too well.  This movie is getting great reviews!

BodenTrunk Show! Today from 10-3,  Nest is hosting a "Boden" trunk show - a catalog/trunkshow company that has exquisite clothes for men, women and kids.  In addition, local artisan Sarah Essex of Dedham, who started the company Hamilton Grace, will be on hand with her fresh, fun accessories ranging from woven fabric and grosgrain belts for the whole family to headbands, hair bows to picture frames and ribbon necklaces.   Joining Sarah will be  jewelry designer, Gitika of Silkstone Art & Design which sells artistically creative semi-precious gemstone jewelry in sterling silver and vermeil.  Featuring necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and rings.  There's something for every woman today-sporty/casual, urban-chic, or working professional.
