Dr. Gold's Message

Dr. Jeffrey D. Gold
This message is so important, I am repeating it:

In reviewing our records we have found that some of you have not had your recommended routine eye exam.
Many of you have received reminder phone calls from Sylvana, urging you to schedule your exams.
A tragic example of this need is found in a former patient who had a decline in the vision in one eye over about one year.  It was so gradual that it was not noticed at first.  When I finally did get to examine the patient, the problem was found and further evaluation led to the diagnosis of a large brain tumor.  The outlook would have been much better if a routine eye exam had been done in a timely fashion.
PLEASE DON'T LET THIS HAPPEN TO YOU!
The recommened times for routine eye exams are listed to the right.

Half of US Adults Have Blurry Vision

You're not alone if your vision is blurry!  According to a major National Eye Institute survey, about 1/2 of all US adults have blurred vision.
Vision errors such as nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism are widespread, based on a survey of more than 12,000 adults, conducted between 1990 and 2004.
  The survey found that:
      1. 3.6 % were farsighted; 33.1% were nearsighted, and 36.2% had astigmatism.
      2. People older than 60 were more likely to be farsighted than nearsighted.
      3. Hispanics were less likely to have any kind of refractive error (44.4%), compared with non-Hispanic Caucasians (53.4%) and African Americans (49.3%)
"Refractive error is...the most common condition affecting the ocular health of the US population, involving young adults, middle-aged persons and older adults of all ethnicities," researchers said.                                           (From All About Vision)

Accidents

Laser Show Harms Eyes of Russians
MOSCOW, July '08 -- A Russian laser show gone terribly wrong caused several dozen people to lose eyesight - some permanently - after their retinas were burned.  The mishap took place at the Aquamarine Open Air Festival near Moscow when organizers decided to erect a large tent to protect attendees from rain showers.  Unfortunately, the tent caused laser light that ordinarily would have dispersed into the sky to bounce off the fabric and into the eyes of the people watching.

Fireworks Accidents Threaten Eyesight
SAN FRANCISCO, July '08 -- "There is nothing worse than a 4th of July celebration ruined by someone being hit in the eye with a bottle rocket," said a spokeperson for the American Academy of Ophthalmology(AAO).  There are more than 9,000 annual fireworks injuries in the US, of which 30% affect eyes and eyesight.
  AAO fireworks safety tips include:
Children should never play with fireworks of any kind.
Fireworks handled by trained professionals should be viewed at a safe distance.
Seek medical help immediately for any fireworks-related eye injury.

Child Golf-Related Injuries
DENVER, October, '08 --Golf-related eye injuries aren't that common among children.  But when they occur they can be very serious.
A University of Colorado Medical School srudy of 11 children with golf-related eye injuries found that golf clubs were involved in 10 cases.  Only one eye injury was linked to a golf ball.
In all cases, bones were broken around the eye socket.  Nine children required surgery, and optic nerve  damage was noted in three cases.  While eight of the injured eyes had 20/20 vision after treatment, two eyes were totally blind.

Eye Exam Frequency

For your information, the recommended frequency of routine eye exams by an Ophthalmologist for you and your family is as follows:
First exam prior to age 5
Next exam prior to age 10
Every 2-3 years during the teens
Every 2 years from age 20 to 35
   Every 1 year thereafter
(School and/or pediatrician eye chart reading does not count!)
These recommendations apply even if you don't suspect a problem.  If at any time, of course, you suspect any problems, or if an emergency arises, you should call me right away (24/7/365).
