Dr. Jeffrey D. Gold
In reviewing our records we have found that some of you have not had your recommended routine eye exam.
Many of you have received reminder phone calls from Sylvana, urging you to schedule your exams.
A tragic example of this need is found in a former patient who had a decline in the vision in one eye over about one year.  It was so gradual that it was not noticed at first.  When I finally did get to examine the patient, the problem was found and further evaluation led to the diagnosis of a large brain tumor.  The  outlook would have been much better if a routine eye exam had been done in a timely fashion.
PLEASE DON'T LET THIS HAPPEN TO YOU!
The recommened times for routine eye exams are listed to the right.
Issue: # 6 Fall/Winter 2008
Greetings!

In this issue, you'll find why routine eye exams are important in the prevention of eye disease through early detection.  You'll also find an exciting update on the Revage Laser for Hair Restoration.

Overlooking the Risks of Eye Disease
Dry EyesMore and more studies are documenting the importance of routine eye exams in detecting and therefore preventing vision loss from eye disease.

While most Americans rank going blind as one of the worst possible health problems, respondents in a major survey revealed that they knew very little about serious eye diseases that could rob them of their sight.

A survey of 3,000 adults sponsored by the National Eye Institute (NEI) and Lions Club International found that:
♦ Only 8 percent knew that glaucoma has no early warning signs before vision is lost.
♦ Only 11 percent knew that diabetic retinopathy also has no early warning signs, although 51 percent were aware that diabetes can cause eye problems.
♦ Just 16 percent had heard the term "low vision," which applies to people whose poor vision cannot be improved through conventional glasses and contacts.

For your information, the recommended frequency of routine eye exams by an Ophthalmologist for you and your family is as follows:
First exam prior to age 5
Next exam prior to age 10
Every 2-3 years during the teens
Every 2 years from age 20 to 35
   Every 1 year thereafter
(School and/or pediatrician eye chart reading does not count!)
These recommendations apply even if you don't suspect a problem.  If at any time, of course, you suspect any problems, or if an emergency arises, you should call me right away .
