A couple of issues back I warned you about using an eyelash lengthening product. The good new is that Allergan, a highly reputable maker of eye medicines and lubricants is going through the FDA approval process to test and ultimately provide a safe version of an eyelash lengthening ointment, which will be available by prescription only. I will keep you posted. |

Greetings!
Custom MonoVision is now a reality!
The FDA has recently approved the use of the Visx laser the one I use) to create Custom MonoVision - one eye for near, the other for far. Basically, I can leave the non-dominant eye mildly near-sighted and as long as you keep both eyes open, you can have both your distance vision and your close-up vision optimized. The works well for those people who require glasses or contacts for distance vision and a bifocal in order to read. If you have already had LASIK or Epi-LASIK, talk to me about your options. If you only require reading glasses, also give me a call to discuss options.
I have stopped performing NearVision CK to eliminate the need for reading glasses because in too many patients the results were unreliable and lasted only a short time (in my hands).

| Supplements and Eye Health |
More and more studies are showing the health benefits of various supplements; some are especially helpful for the eyes.
Hormones:
A study that recently appeared in the American Journal of Ophthalmology found that levels of the hormone DHEA were significantly lower in those with macular degeneration than in those who do not have the disease. So if you have early macular degeneration or a family history of this disease, you should consider having blood testing for level of this hormone and perhaps supplementation if your level is found to be low.
Vitamins:
A protein called C-Reactive protein(CRP) and an amino acid called homocysteine have been found to be elevated in the blood in the presence of inflammation. Increased levels of these compounds were associated with macular degeneration in a group of patients aged 49 to 75. These levels can be reduced with appropriate vitamin supplements.
Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10):
CoQ10 is involved in all the chemical reactions in the body and acts as a powerful anti-oxidant. Taking CoQ10 supplements may be helpful in preventing aging changes in the eyes, heart, and skin, and may increase survival rates in breast cancer, help with blood sugar control in diabetics, boost the immune system in HIV patients, and slow the progression of Parkinson's disease.
Omega 3:
For a long time, I have been asking all my laser vision correction patients to begin Omega 3 in order to help with the temporary ocular dryness induced by damage to the corneal nerves during the laser vision surgery.
Now we know, in addition, that Omega 3 is a powerful anti-oxidant, which will reduce free radicals and help you live longer. There is some reason to believe, as well, that anti-oxidants can delay cataract development and the progress of macular degeneration. |
