ALBANY, N.Y. (April 13, 2011) - The Hudson River Bank & Trust Company Foundation has awarded the American Red Cross of Northeastern New York (ARCNENY) a $7,500 grant for disaster relief and emergency preparedness in Columbia County.
"This generous grant will enable ARCNENY to offer "Be Red Cross Ready" training to at least 135 more Columbia County residents, preparing them to respond to emergencies in a calm, well organized, well equipped manner," said Gary Striar, CEO of ARCNENY.
The Red Cross works tirelessly to provide relief to victims of disaster and to help people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies. In the wake of a disaster, such as a home or apartment fire, the Red Cross is on the scene within two hours to provide relief and comfort to the victims. Dedicated volunteers distribute food, clothing, and stuffed animals for children in the immediate aftermath of a disaster. In the following days and weeks the Red Cross assists victims in finding new housing and rebuilding their lives.
The Red Cross is also committed to training people to "Be Red Cross Ready" in case of an emergency. The course provides information on staying informed of possible emergency situations, creating and maintaining an emergency kit, and having a family plan for emergencies.
By late 2010, ARCNENY had already responded to six disasters affecting 31 Columbia County residents. Approximately $7,200 was spent on relief expenses. Training classes in "Be Red Cross Ready" assisted 236 Columbia County residents in becoming better prepared for emergencies. The Hudson River Bank & Trust Company Foundation grant will support the ability of the Red Cross to continue providing relief and comfort to Columbia County residents affected by disasters.
