Rabbi Wachsman delivers pre-Neilah shmuz Rabbi Wachsman succeeded in inspiring WITS to celestial heights in his annual
pre-Neilah shmuz. In classic form, he illustrated the power of
teshuvah through the story of King Achav. Achav's whole drive and
essence was to fight Hashem. One especially clear demonstration of
Achav's nature was his refusal to do teshuva even after miracles in a
confrontation between Eliyahu and Achav revealed to all that
Hashem is the master of the world and there can be no successful rebellion
against Hashem. His betrayal against the Omnipotence of the Almighty manifested itself in his inscription on the doors of Shomron defying Hashem. Finally, at the advice of his wicked queen Izebel, he proceeded to maliciously have Navos executed so that he could acquire a piece of real estate. The Navi informed Achav that Hashem will strike
back. Achav, despite his wicked past, was able to transform
himself at that moment and do teshuva, as he tore his clothes and wore
sackcloth. His transformation was so complete that Chazal refer to
it as teshuva be'lev-from his heart and not merely teshuva based on fear of
punishment, as elaborated by the Metzudad Dovid and the Malbim. The bnei yeshiva's hearts were awakened at the enormous
implications of this Chazal- if Achav had the potential to transform himself in
this incredible fashion, we certainly have the ability to commit to a year of
growth.
