Letter From The Director
Greetings!

As the Senate returns from recess, the hole left by Senator Ted Kennedy's (D-MA) passing will become even more tangible.  As a Senate staff member for 14 years, I can't imagine being on the Senate floor during a health debate without Kennedy.  I would frequently sit with my boss, Senator John Chafee (R-RI), while the Senior Senator from Massachusetts spoke.  Many times we were on the same side of the issue, sometimes at odds, but regardless of whether or not we agreed, the passion and conviction he brought to the debate was formidable.

Kennedy was a champion for those who could not fight for themselves - individuals with disabilities, those with mental health issues, the elderly, children and the poor.  His influence on the health care system has been significant and will continue to be felt for decades to come.

His death, while tragic, allows Congress the great opportunity to honor his legacy and work together to better the health of our nation.  The coming months will be crucial as health reform proposals get reviewed and amended.  Health reform must not solely become health insurance reform.  As Kennedy knew so well, health reform is about achieving better health outcomes.

We must tackle the significant issues affecting the health delivery system and our communities today -- from integrating health records to recognizing the impact of our environment on our health to providing health professionals with the tools and support they need to provide the most effective, high quality care available.

On Sept. 9, the STOP Obesity Alliance will convene an open discussion  led by 16th U.S. Surgeon General, David Satcher, M.D., Ph.D., FAAFP, FACPM, FACP and 17th U.S. Surgeon General, Richard H. Carmona, M.D., M.P.H., FACS, about obesity - the epidemic that costs this country $147 billion a year and which affects the quality of life of so many Americans.  Together, the organizations from this coalition will release consensus recommendations on how to improve the treatment and prevention of obesity.

I invite you all to join us as we do our part in carrying the torch that Kennedy has passed to us to fight for a healthier America.

Together, we can accomplish this goal.

Sincerely,

Researchers searching for a cure for obesity said recently they have developed a drug that not only makes mice lose weight, but it also reverses diabetes and lowers their cholesterol, too.  The drug, which they have dubbed fatostatin, stops the body from making fat, instead releasing the energy from food. They hope it may lead to a pill that would fight obesity, diabetes and cholesterol, all at once.

Keith Bachman, M.D., a clinical leader of Kaiser Permanente's Weight Management Initiative, spoke at CDC's Weight of the Nation, and said that physicians should use tact and sensitivity in broaching the obesity subject with patients.  This method, he said, may go a long way toward attaining the desired result -- the loss of excess pounds.

Researchers at Wake Forest University have discovered that visceral fat, or "abdominal fat," lodges deep within visceral organs, such as the heart, liver and blood vessels, and may be an indicator of increased heart attack risk.  In a study of 42 female monkeys, the scientists found that those with the most social stress - in the monkeys' case, that meant being at the bottom of the social hierarchy - packed away the most fat around the middle.

Robert Kushner, president of The Obesity Society, told reporters that physicians will soon be able to become specialists in weight management.
