| Director's Notes |
As I walked through the rooms of Highfield Hall this past week, I was struck by the level of activity in this old house in the middle of the winter. Our weekly stitchers form the American Needlepoint Guild were in the dining room stitching and chatting. The piano was being played by Brianna LaPage for a group of Alzheimer's patients and their caregivers as part of the new Arts and Alzheimer's program. Delicious, truly mouth-watering smells were emanating from the kitchen as Gail Blakely concluded one of her popular cooking classes. All of my senses were engaged, and I thought once again what an amazing place this is, so full of life, inspiration, and community. It wasn't that long ago that my senses were engaged by dust and power tools - what a long way we've come in a short period of time! You have played an important role in the success of Highfield Hall and we thank you for your participation in keeping this dream alive. Despite our successes, Highfield has had a challenging year financially; as I write today our Annual Fund remains more than $50,000 short of goal. This fund is critically important as it supports our operations and enables us to be open to the public and offer many programs free of charge. If you have not yet contributed, or are able to help fill the gap with an additional gift, we welcome and appreciate your online donation. Thanks to all of you who have already supported Highfield Hall this year in so many ways. Our Business Partners alone have provided almost $35,000 in in-kind support -- wow! We hope to see you soon on the hill.

Taking Flight: Learning the
Art of Bird Photography
Craig Gibson Thursday, January 28, 7:00 pm A lifelong amateur photographer and birder for more than 10 years, Craig Gibson combined both interests when he began taking photographs of osprey in Falmouth. This fueled his passion and he expanded to shooting photos of other birds throughout the Cape. Capturing birds in flight and other action photography is his primary interest. Craig works constantly to improve his technique using hand-held intermediate and large telephoto lenses. He is also working on a better understanding of bird identification and behavior, so that he can anticipate, for the best photo, what birds might do. Craig's photos have appeared in The Enterprise throughout the last year. He is a contributing photographer to the Natural History Notes blog published by Mass Audubon Society's Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary and to Birds of North America, an online project for the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Several of Craig's prints will be available for sale at the talk and on-line, with proceeds benefiting The 300 Committee.

Highfield Hall Holiday Ball -- Thank you to All!
|
What people are saying about the Holiday Ball:
"The best event of the year in Falmouth" "The food was outrageously good"
"I can't wait until next year" "The most fun I've ever had at an event like this"
The Highfield Hall Holiday Ball proved once again to be a magical evening. In its third year, we noticed that the gowns are getting longer, the clothes are getting dressier, ball-goers are clearly practicing their dancing, and the event has truly become a special way to celebrate the season and cap-off the year. The addition of a silent auction added a fun new element this year, and the event was a huge success by all accounts.
We are grateful to the members of the Holiday Ball Committee who work hard all year long to create this enchanting evening. A special thanks to our sponsors and auction donors for their support of this important fundraiser. And of course, it wouldn't be the Holiday Ball without the delicious delectables and generosity of Chef Roland, and the floral genius of Sue Hobart -- a big thanks to them as well.

Faces of Highfield: Board Member Spotlight
|
Peter Abrahams
Congratulations to
Historic Highfield Board Member Peter Abrahams whose latest book debuted on the
extended New York Times Bestsellers List last week. Thereby Hangs a Tail
is the brainchild of Peter's alter ego, Spencer Quinn, and features the
sleuthing duo of Chet, a canine, and Bernie, his human sidekick in this sequel
to Dog On It. If you can believe it, Chet the Dog has a blog where you can learn more about Peter's canine character. Peter has written
23 novels including Oblivion, The Fan and End of Story. He
is also the author of The Echo Falls series for middle-readers. Reality
Check is a finalist for the Edgar best mystery award in the young adult
category this year.
Peter joined the Historic Highfield Board of Directors in 2008 and serves on
our Executive Committee. Far beyond his amazing writing skills and interest in
cultural activities in the town, Peter brings a quick wit to our board meetings
that keep us in stitches and makes service to Highfield Hall fun and enjoyable.
Good work Peter and thanks for your service!
