Director's Notes
A huge thank you to all who supported our major fundraiser for this year, the 2010 Toyota Prius Raffle. We appreciate each and every person who purchased one of the 600 tickets sold -- we wish everyone could have won! The winner was Carolyn Shohet, of Carlisle, Massachusetts, who kindly donated her present vehicle back to Highfield to make the fundraiser an even bigger success. It was fun to be part of the excitement generated by ticket-holders who were absolutely convinced they were going to win!

Come up for a walk in Beebe Woods, see an art show at Highfield Hall or the Cape Cod Conservatory, or bring a picnic to have on the lawn. This little slice of heaven on the hill is yours to enjoy -- we hope to see you soon!

Darwin to Digital Exhibition

Clark ButterflyDarwin to Digital: Guild of Natural Science Illustrators, New England Chapter
Through Friday, October 30
Main Galleries & Clark Gallery
A diverse view of Science Illustration in recognition of Darwin's bicentennial, this exhibit highlights the range of styles, techniques and subjects that exist in the field today from members of the GNSI-NE. It also showcases prints from the MBL/WHOI library's renowned collection of historical illustrations, including Haeckel, Leuckart, Audubon and others. The show provides a unique juxtaposition of contemporary artists with that of several
significant predecessors in the field. Local students of illustrator Julia Child have their work on display as well, and you won't believe these artists are "students" when you see their work. Some of the art, and unframed prints, will be available for sale, with a portion of the proceeds to benefit Highfield Hall. Learn more about the exhibition and related programs.

Inkwell Literary Series: Dennis LehaneDenis Lehane
Wednesday,October 28 , 7 pm
Tickets $7 at Inkwell Bookstore or by calling 508-540-0039 with credit card information.
New York Times bestselling Mr. Lehane will be speaking about his newly released paperback The Given Day. Author Dennis Lehane's long-awaited eighth novel unflinchingly captures the political and social unrest of a nation caught at the crossroads between past and future. Set in Boston, the story includes cameos by some of the most influential figures of the era: Babe Ruth; Eugene O'Neill; leftist activist Jack Reed; NAACP founder W. E. B. DuBois; Mitchell Palmer, Woodrow Wilson's ruthless Red-chasing attorney general; cunning Massachusetts governor Calvin Coolidge; and an ambitious young Department of Justice lawyer named John Hoover. The Given Day explores the crippling violence and irrepressible exuberance of a country at war with, and in the thrall of, itself. As Danny, Luther, and those around them struggle to define themselves in increasingly turbulent times, they gradually find family in one another and, together, ride a rising storm of hardship, deprivation, and hope that will change all their lives.

Highfield Fun Fact of the Month

Did you know that Highfield Hall was once a hotel?
Highfield Hotel
When theatrical producer Arthur Beckhardt turned the Highfield stable into a theater in 1947, he began operating both Highfield Hall and its sister mansion, Tanglewood, as resort hotels. He dubbed Tanglewood "Tanglewood Manor" and named Highfield "Tanglewood Arms." When Dewitt Terheun purchased the property from his friend, Beckhardt, he operated Tanglewood as a hotel for just one season before deciding that the hotel business was not to his liking. Instead he allowed the summer stock company to use Tanglewood as a dormitory, while he and his wife Clare renovated Highfield Hall for their own use as summer residence.
