Highfield Fun Fact of the Month

Did you know that a terrible forest fire swept through Beebe Woods in 1947?
forest fire
Burning for four days, the inferno threatened the entire town and nearly engulfed both Tanglewod and Highfield Hall. At the time, both mansions were being used as hotels and Highfield Theatre had just completed its first summer season. Fire companies from all over the Cape were called in to help, and ash fell upon the town for days afterwards.

The map at right, from the Falmouth Enterprise, is one of many that will be included in Highfield Hall's new Google Earth mapping project. The brainchild of local geologist Jim Robb, the project is being prepared for the public by Robb and Falmouth High School junior Nick Riebesehl.

Join Jim Robb on a walk through Beebe Woods on October 14 as mentioned above in the Beebe Woods Nature Walks section.
