| Thank you to everyone who contributed and participated in the Upper Grade Book Swap! A special thanks to the Silva Family for their generous donation of books for the Swap. We couldn't have done it without you!
An additional special thank you to Diane Kastell, for coordinating the Upper Grade Book Swap for her 5th and final year. I know the students and teachers greatly enjoy and appreciate the opportunity to share, recycle, and reuse the books brought to the swap and look forward to it each year. |

Introducing Soul Shoppe at Strandwood!
Parent's Educational Night, March 15th 6:30pm to 8:30pm
| This year, Strandwood PTA has helped to fund the Soul Shoppe Program for your children. It consists of assemblies that focus on problem-solving, conflict resolution, creating a community of learning and growth and defining and internalizing the character traits that create great communities and citizens. You have probably seen the bookmarks that have come home with your child that say "Free to Be!" These were given to the students at assemblies led by Amy McClain, Licensed Soul Shoppe Facilitator and Trained Parent Educator. She will be speaking to parents in the Library on March 15th from 6:30-8:30 to explain Soul Shoppe and guide us through this exiting program. Please come and listen so that you can support your child at home with the information they are learning at school. This is a free event and childcare is provided. We look forward to seeing you there.
Please visit the websites below for additional information.

| FAME Says Goodbye to Kendra Phair and Laurie Wozniak
By Alison Clary
| It is with bitter sweetness that Strandwood says good-bye to the FAME (Fine Arts Mini Experience) program's biggest advocates, Kendra Phair and Laurie Wozniak, as their children move on to new schools. One of the most popular PTA programs offered at Strandwood, FAME has flourished under the leadership of these two women for a combined total of twenty-three years!
Kendra Phair started as a docent for FAME sixteen years ago and has been the ultimate "go-to" person for any question regarding the program. She later became one of the head coordinators and the art and music lesson preparer as well. Despite her quiet and unassuming demeanor, Kendra is a powerhouse of information, talent, and technical skill. Every month, behind the scenes, she ensures the program's success through diligent, detail-oriented research on artists and composers, acts as the teacher liaison, and handles extensive scheduling for every class and grade on campus. She is a master of multi-tasking and combines organizational skills with an instinctive ability to process complex material, train docents, and teach all students, grades, and skill levels in an engaging and age-appropriate manner. She is patient, unpretentious and kind, and although her presence will continue to be felt in the computer lab, her contributions to FAME will be sorely missed in the coming years. Laurie Wozniak has been with FAME for seven years. She is one of the head coordinators of the program, the lead set design coordinator, and a docent for both art and music lessons. She pursues excellence in every one of her tasks and is never content with "good enough." Laurie leaves no stone unturned to get things done right and follows through with great energy and efficiency. She is a skilled communicator, keeps every docent tucked in with diplomacy and professionalism, and reminds everyone to have fun. Managing docents, deadlines, and creative obstacles is a monthly challenge, and Laurie problem-solves effectively but never at the expense of the program's artistic and academic goals and objectives. As set coordinator and designer, she brain-storms with humor, taps into an active imagination, explores all possible resources, and brings ideas on paper to life. Six times a year, the FAME room is transformed into a theatrical environment that is aesthetically appealing and conducive to learning. FAME wouldn't have been the same all these years without Laurie.
Both Kendra and Laurie believe in teamwork, the joy of volunteering, the incomparable value of art and music in education, and serving all Strandwood children -- not just their own. They have advocated tirelessly for the FAME program and served the Strandwood community well. May we be inspired to continue on in their footsteps with the same high standards. A fond farewell to Kendra and Laurie!

| Local Assemblymember to Speak at PH City Hall | Assemblymember Susan Bonilla will speak at a Pleasant Hill town hall meeting on Thursday, March 8, from 7-9pm at City Hall, Council Chambers, sponsored by the PH Education/Advisory Commission.
Susan Bonilla is a member of the Assembly Education Committee, and serves as chair of the Assembly Budget Subcommittee on Education Finance. Needless to say, she has a lot of knowledge about school funding, can provide information as to what is happening at the state level, and how it impacts our local schools.
This meeting is open to the public, and we are currently accepting questions ahead of time so her staff can do the appropriate research to answer our questions. Feel free to submit any questions directly to Jennifer Ortega (PH Ed.Com. member) at jortega.ph@gmail.com with any questions for Assm. Bonilla.
Her bill, AB 1172, which would allow school districts to consider the financial impact when considering a conversion charter (like CVHS) is out of Assembly and is currently at the Senate level. I encourage you to write letters and emails to Senator Mark Desaulnier to add your support to the bill. His email is: senator.desaulnier@sen.ca.gov |
| 25 Manners Kids Should Know
From our friends at Parents.com
| |
Your child's rude 'tude isn't always intentional. Sometimes kids just don't realize it's impolite to interrupt, pick their nose, or loudly observe that the lady walking in front of them has a large behind. And in the hustle and bustle of daily life, busy moms and dads don't always have the time to focus on etiquette. But if you reinforce these 25 must-do manners, you'll raise a polite, kind, well-liked child.
