| How Book Fair Supports Strandwood Library! | |
The Book Fair is a self funded program intended to raise money for the purchase of new books, videos and DVDs for the Strandwood library.
The Library does not receive funding from the state, MDUSD, or PTA for library materials. Its funding is derived solely from Birthday Book Club donations and the fall and spring Book Fairs.
We work with Scholastic Books to raise money for our library. All profits raised through the Fairs go directly to the Strandwood library. We receive 50% of the total sales when books are purchased directly from Scholastic. If we choose to take the profit in cash, we receive 25% of the sales. The cash is then used to purchase the remainder of the books chosen by our library media teachers. The library benefits every student and teacher at the school. Thank you for your continued support to Strandwood Library and Book Fair!
Purchased for Strandwood Library 2010 -2011 School Year:
215 Books, 29 Videos/DVD's, 64 Birthday Book Club, For a Total of 308

It's going to be a big week and it's all about The Nutcracker. Thank you to all of our wonderful volunteers, teachers, students and staff that make this all happen! Need more Nutcracker information? Click here for the Nutcracker web page.
Sugar Plum Sweet Shoppe: We need volunteers to bring in baked goods and holiday treats to sell at our Sugar Plum Sweet Shoppe. All items need to be individually wrapped and appropriately proportioned for sale and brought to school by 3pm Friday, December 2nd. All items will be priced at $1.00 and all proceeds from the sale of these items will help contribute to future stage and set decorations, update costumes and overall Nutcracker maintenance. Suggested items include: breakfast breads, cookies, rice crispy treats, homemade candy, muffins, etc. If you have any questions, please contact Melaine Huth at melaineph@sbcglobal.net
Tickets: Each performing student gets TWO seats per show - there are no tickets sold (this is a free event) but there will be a guest list at the door. All guests need a seat, including small children. Doors will open 30 minutes prior to showtime. We are limited to two seats per student, with no extras available due to our large number of performers and audience restrictions based on the Fire Code. If grandparents or friends wish to view the performance, they are welcome to attend our Dress Rehearsals that take place during the week.
1st Annual Gingerbread House Contest: We were inspired to take it to another level after seeing all of the beautiful cakes at Fall Fest. All houses are due no later than Friday, 12/2 @ 3pm. Only one house per family please. All houses will be displayed on Saturday, December 3rd at The Nutcracker.
Dress Rehearsals: Dress Rehearsals will begin at 10am SHARP! This is the perfect opportunity for grandparents, relatives and friends to come watch the big show. Seating is limited to the back 1/3 of the MUR, so please plan accordingly. All Strandwood students will have the opportunity to watch one of the three Dress Rehearsals. Please have your child come to school in costume basics with hair prepared as directed. If you still have questions as to hair or costume requirements, please email nutcracker@strandwood.org
Nutcracker Closet: Are you still searching for a leotard, white turtleneck or ballet shoes? Please contact Alexandra Kemp at nutcrackercloset@strandwood.org and hopefully we can help you out! We still have quite a few items available to borrow.
DVD Sales: Don't miss your child's precious moments on stage. Pre-order a DVD of the show by clicking here to download a form. A sales booth will be set-up on Saturday, so don't forget your checkbook.

Doorstep Farmers at Strandwood?
By Lea Harrington
| |
A local company, Doorstep Farmers, has approached Strandwood about an ongoing fundraiser that they would like to provide to us. It is local company that offers fresh, locally grown organic produce to our community. For Strandwood parents, the cost of each box is $24.95. It weighs 8-10lbs. on average and will have a variety of 7-9 different items, depending on season and availability. You, as a customer, will be able to log on to the website to see what is going to be in your box, and make customizations if needed. You can opt for weekly, or bi-weekely delivery. The produce would be delivered to our school on a weekly, set-day basis, available for pick up by you during a one hour window (before and after pick-up). There will be an employee from Doorstep Farmers to give your box to you at Strandwood.
To make this fundraiser work all produce MUST be delivered to Strandwood. We will receive a percentage of revenue, depending on our amount of participation (5% for 15 members all the way to 8% for 100 or more). If produce is not picked up, Doorstep Farmers will deliver to your home the following day but Strandwood would NOT receive the percentage of profit.
We need to have at least 15 members to move forward. Please follow this link and answer one simple question http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/5YXVP9K This will help us determine if this is something that we are interested in partaking in. Please take the survey by Friday, Dec. 2.
Two local schools, Parkmead, and Hidden Valley are having great success and are enjoying their fresh produce. For more information on Doorstep Farmers, please check out their website: www.DoorstepFarmers.com

Target Red Card
By Cindy Turner
| |
Do you have a Target Red Card yet? Now the Target Red Card saves you 5% on every Target shopping trip, every day!
Apply and get approved for a TARGET credit card (it only takes 5 minutes at the check-out). Enroll in Take Charge For Education and designate Strandwood as your school. Start shopping and using your card. Target will track purchases and send a donation check to the school. Currently, we have only 35 or so families participating in the program but we received a check last year for almost $600!!!! This is the easiest money we've ever made - passive fundraising at its best!!
For more information, go to the PTA website and click on the TARGET icon or click here.

Pleasant Hill Library Wants Ideas
| |
The Pleasant Hill Library wants to hear ideas from kids about what they need and want from the library. Their ideas have the potential to change the library for everyone!
Patrick Remer, the children's librarian, invites elementary school children to attend one of two focus groups to be held next week. Parents can relax and browse in the library while the children chat with Patrick about their ideas for the library and enjoy cookies.
The first focus group will be on Tuesday, November 29 at 4pm and will be for older elementary school children. The second focus group will be on Wednesday, November 30 at 4pm and will be for younger elementary school children. Each group will take about 45 minutes to an hour.
To RSVP, please email Patrick at premer@ccclib.org as soon as possible since places are limited!
