Great American Fundraiser Continues
By Janine Gamble
| |
Good morning! We are now in our second week of the fall fundraiser. We are hoping to exceed our goal of $38,000. We need your help in doing this. Be sure to check out Great American's website at gaschoolstore.com. Our School Code is 1423003. There are many items online that are not in the catalog that went home. Remember that magazine subscriptions count as two items sold. When your student has sold 12 items, you get to pick an item from the catalog. The canvas items and magazines are not included in the 12 items and you pick.
Also, just a recap of what your student can turn in, when, where, and what they'll receive. They can turn in their orders to the office. There is a Great American bin placed on the table next to the PTA basket. The PTA half-door, on Tuesday and Thursday at 2:50 p.m. will be where your child can turn in their slips and collect their goodies. For this week they can turn in their ducky slips and receive a lanyard and duck or ducks. If they've sold 10 items, they can turn in their slip and get their picture taken and placed on the board outside the multi-use room. They can turn in the Friday Raffle Bonus Coupons to be entered in Friday's drawing. We will be meeting the kindergarteners on Tuesday and Thursday by D-1 at 11:30 a.m. and 1:40 p.m. to do their distribution.
Thank you all so much! We look forward to reporting back to you with some great sale numbers in October. Any questions feel free to contact us. Janine Gamble, janine.gamble@gmail.com or robinelawady@live.com

5th Graders Off to Outdoor Ed
| |
The buses will be loading up this morning to take our 5th grade students on an unforgettable adventure to the Exploring New Horizons Sempervirens camp.
Throughout the week our fifth grade students will turn over logs in search of salamanders, study astronomy on a night hike, and learn how they are connected to a watershed while naturalists weave science, art and music into their hikes and lessons. Students will also debate a development issue during a town hall meeting, complete team challenges in a low ropes challenge course and help to work with the plants and chickens in the garden.
Sempervirens is located at the headwaters of Wadell Creek and the San Lorenzo River in the Santa Cruz Mountains near Big Basin Redwoods State Park. To read the program overview click here.

School is Back.. Drive, Ride and Walk Responsibly
By Jeff Eide | With school back in session everyone needs a reminder that both drivers and pedestrians must be alert at all times. As parents, it is up to us to teach pedestrian and bicycle safety to our children and act as role models while walking, biking or driving. Driving to Pleasant Hill Middle School daily has opened my eyes to just how many people do not follow the laws of the road. Pedestrians and bicycle riders are some of the worst offenders. Please, let's renew our commitment to keeping our children safe and setting a good example for our children to follow.
- Keep your attention focused on the road, not your passengers.
- Don't eat or drink while driving.
- Do not use your cell phone.
- Be courteous - slow down and allow others to merge.
- Always stop at stop signs.
- Respect the right of way of others (including cyclists).
- Slow down when you see a yellow light.
- Don't assume pedestrians see you or that they will act predictably.
As a driver, having a clear view of the road is also imperative. How many times have you been blinded by the low sun because of a dirty windshield but kept driving, hoping everything will be alright? How about on those cold mornings... ever start driving before your windshield is fully defrosted and you are peering through a small clean spot for a mile or two and can't see anything out the side windows? Keeping your windshield clean, inside and out, is the first step to insuring your vision will not be obstructed.
Here are just a few pedestrian tips taken from the City of San Jose's Street Smarts webpage: Visit that site by clicking here for brochures and more information.
1) Make eye contact with drivers when crossing busy streets and continue to watch out for traffic the entire time you are in the crosswalk. Your life may depend on it, regardless of whether or not you have the right-of-way. 2) If the intersection has a pedestrian signal, press the button and wait for the pedestrian signal to display the "WALK" indicator. The "WALK" signal indicates that it is safe for a pedestrian facing the signal to proceed across the roadway in that direction. Continue to be alert for traffic at all times, however, while in the roadway and always check for turning vehicles. 3) Remember, don't take those "NO RIGHT TURN ON RED" signs for granted. Always check for turning vehicles before stepping off the curb - motorists make mistakes too.
For more information and tips regarding pedestrian safety refer to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's "Prevent Pedestrian Crashes: Parents and Caregivers of Elementary School Children". You can view that brochure by clicking here.
Next Week - Be courteous to our neighbors when parking or waiting for your student.
