Back To School We Go

Tomorrow is the day. The 2011-2012 school year starts. Please remember to leave early and be patient. The first week is a little crazy anyway but with the construction on going it will be even crazier. We always get through the first week of school just fine and this year will  be no different.

PTA Welcome Back Coffee

Join us the first day of school, Tuesday, August 30th, at 8:10 a.m. in front of the multi-use room for a special Welcome Back Coffee sponsored by the Strandwood PTA. Come and catch up with friends you haven't seen all summer or maybe make new ones.

Hope to see you there!

Back To School Nights

Back to School Nights will be held this week and next. Please check the bottom of this newsletter for the day and time of your student's BTS night. This is a great opportunity to meet your child's teacher and see what is in store for this year. Plan on attending these important evening events.

Drop off and Pick Up at Strandwood

Crazy Driver If this is your first year at Strandwood, or you forget things quickly, let's review the drop-off and pick-up procedures. When dropping off or picking up your student in front of the school only stop in the yellow zones. Do not stop in the red zones please. If you have to leave your vehicle for any reason, for any amount of time, find a parking stall to pull into. Those who leave their vehicles in the drop off zones or park in the red zones do a great disservice to the rest of the drivers and can create a hazard. The Red zone is for the buses to load and unload students. You will be paged over the PA system and asked to move your car immediately if you are blocking the buses access, and everyone will be watching.

Also available is off-site parking and drop-off on both the north and south side of the school. To the south, there is parking on Monti Court or Monti Circle, off Gregory Lane, and to the north parking is available on Maureen Lane and surrounding streets. If you get a chance you might want to check these locations out before school starts on Tuesday. If you have the luxury of
DDA parking Spotbeing able to walk your children to the classroom these are great alternatives to fighting the crown in front of the school. Always make sure you lock you vehicles and leave valuables out of sight. I don't know of any problems around the Strandwood area but you should always take precautions when parking in a public area.

Please take note of a special parking spot at the end of the first row of parking. This spot is auctioned off at the Dinner Dance Auction and is reserved for the highest bidder. I know it is tempting to take the only open spot but please don't.

Strandwood Receives Grants

Strandwood Elementary School was presented with a few grants in June that will help programs during the 2011-2012 school year. The Foundation for Pleasant Hill Education granted $1,000 towards equipment for our famous Nutcracker show and Kohl's presented the PTA with $1,500 to be used at next years Make A Difference Day. We also received a $1000 grant from the Pleasant Hill Community Foundation for the purchase of the headset system, props and costumes for the Nutcracker program. Thank you to all the organizations that gave us the grants and to those Strandwood parents that applied for them.
GO GREEN with Chico Bags and Support Outdoor Ed!

By Belinda Sullivan

Don't miss your chance to support this year's Strandwood 5th grade class by buying Chico bags!  On Wednesday, August 31, at 12:30 and Thursday, September 1, 2:40PM, get your $10 bag for friends and family! These reusable shoulder bags, proudly made in Chico, California, come in beautiful colors and can hold up to 40 pounds!  Conveniently stashed away in its own attached pouch, you can turn down all plastic retail bags and pull it out from your purse at check-out.  Treat yourself to one or use them as stocking stuffers and "just because" presents.  Come on by the Yellow Heaven (lower grades) playground on Wednesday and the Westover Entrance on Thursday!

See you then!

Thanks!

Solutions For Morning Madness
From our friends at Parents.com

We asked: How do you get your kids out the door on time in the morning?

You said: Getting yourself and your kids ready on time doesn't have to be hectic. Forty-five percent of moms make mornings work by starting the process the night before, preparing lunches and planning outfits. In the a.m., 28 percent of moms set a 10-minute warning bell so kids know when to stop dawdling, and 18 percent have a strict "no TV before school" rule. A few moms say they ease morning stress by giving kids a checklist to follow or by letting kids set their own alarm clocks.
