The Dinner Dance and Auction committee is hard at work to bring you another successful and fun event. We are so excited to introduce new families to our annual tradition and give them a warm welcome as we open the doors on April 9th!! We have reached out to over 600 businesses and have begun to collect a great variety of donation items, but we are always looking for more. If you have a business in mind that may be willing to donate their services or items, please contact CindyTurner. There are donation letters and forms available on www.strandwood.org, in the auction section, or in the school office. It is very easy to print some up and have them on hand when the opportunity arises. Please let Katherine Bracken know if you have acquired a donation.

We are also organizing the sign-up parties, which are always a big hit, as well as big money maker! Contact Martha Alexander or Melaine Huth with your idea or if you need one! Class projects are underway and look great so far. These items will be available exclusively on-line. So when the auction goes live on March 7th, make sure you check them out. The kids are always excited and proud of what they contribute to the auction !

Remember, Keep Sick Kids Home

Our recent warm weather may have lulled some of us into thinking - aha! Spring is here and no more winter colds and flu! A reminder to parents and guardians, although we want your children at school to learn, we do not expect you to send them to school if they are ill. Children with a fever, vomiting in the night (or morning or afternoon), or "copious green matter" running from their noses should stay home until symptom free. Remind your children to use the the "Dracula" cough protection, blow their noses, and wash their hands frequently! On behalf of the other students and adults at school we thank you!

Education News and Information

A Message From the Superintendent:

Given recent news articles around our District's budget and the dire State budget projections, we have decided to send out two newsletters about our budget situation.  The first article will focus on the status of our current budget.  The second article (to be sent out later) will focus on how the Governor's budget proposal will affect our District.

1.As cited in the EdSource January 11, 2011, publication, K-12 education funding has been reduced 10% between the 2007-08 school year and the 2010-11 school year.

2.During the same time period, the District's health care premiums have increased 31.19%, amounting to an additional $7.1 million.

3.Over the same period, student enrollment has declined by 1,000 students which amounts to a revenue reduction of over $5 million each year.  Unfortunately, we can not reduce staff commensurate with declining enrollment.  For example, if all of the student enrollment reductions came from two or three schools in the District, cost savings could be more easily achieved by concentrating staff reductions on just those campuses.  However, the loss of these 1,000 students has been spread throughout the District, making it impossible to keep expenditure cuts away from the classroom.  Click her for the complete first article
